Sherman. Follows then the story of the Great March to the Sea, of the capture of Savannah, of the campaigns of Franklin and Nashville, and of the adoption by Congress of the Thirteenth Amendment. The rest of the first chapter considers the exhaustion of the South, Davis's refusal to treat for peace except on an impossible basis, and Lincoln's offer to compensate the South for the loss of her slaves.
