return furious for blood and vengeance. The king violates all his

The last and worst of the Stuarts, James II., one of the most blood-

thirsty of monarchs.-His atrocities in Scotland.-His delight in

the bloody campaign of the wretch Jefferies.-Horrible state of the

country under him.-Numbers sold into slavery.-Attempts to

introduce popery.-The expulsion of James owing to the seven

bishops, a popular error propagated by the aristocratic writers.-The

nation expelled him.-The clergy, who had preached up absolutism

CHAPTER XVI.

THE THIRD, OR MOLE PERIOD OF THE ARISTOCRACY.-King and

aristocracy warned by their fall, commenced now a subtler policy-

that of deceiving the people and undermining the Constitution.-

The aristocracy possess themselves of the Crown lands.-John Bull

flattered by this hollow homage to his power and freedom, forgets

to put the house-door key in his pocket, and the aristocracy get

possession of his house, the House of Commons.-Whig and Tory

become the political Darby and Joan; whichever out, the aristocracy

always in. They commence the great continental wars; and invent

the national debt; and finally possess themselves, in the people's

name, of the people's house; of office, taxation, colonies and every-

thing.

WHIG AND TORY-THE LOCUST AND THE PALMERWORM.-The

patriots of "the glorious Revolution" take good care of themselves.

-Get not only the Crown lands, but the grants of the forfeited

power under Queen Anne, and nullify all Marlborough's victories,

NATURE AND COST OF OUR WARS SINCE THE REVOLUTION.-The

aristocracy having removed the burden of taxation from them-

selves to the people, war became a profitable game.-Hence the

wars of William to defend Holland, of the Georges to defend

Hanover, and the wars of the French Revolution. Tabular
