WOLVES.-Last year no less than 1,225 persons in France received a reward from the Government for killing wolves.

AFTER the marriage, near Plymouth, of Mr. Bewes to Mirs Soltan, the bridegroom found under his plate at the wedding breakfast a cheque for £25,000 from his uncle, T. A. Bewes, a clergyman.

A SOCIETY OF MURDERERS has existed in Ireland for some time past, and lately some of its terrible doings have been brought to light, and some of the perpetrators of most atrocious crimes are likely to be brought to justice. How many priests heard of these foul deeds at the confessional?

ROYALTY BOYCOTTING.-The Prince of Wales, at the urgent request of the Princess, is bestirring himself to put down the cruel sport of pigeon shooting. Several ladies, headed by the Princess of Wales, have decided to boycott all known pigeon-shooters. We hope it will have the desired effect.

A ROYAL CONVERT.-It is reported that Prince Herman Singh, heir to one of the richest provinces in Northern India, has been converted to Christianity. This will require him to renounce his claims to his princely estates, but, like Moses, he esteems the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of his principality.

PROGRESS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY.—A century since the Hawaiians were savages and cannibals. Now there are over three hundred telephone wires in use in the city of Honolulu, and the application of the telephone is made throughout the islands on the plantations. Some of the planters are now cutting their cane at night with the aid of electric light.

THE BIBLE AND ROYALTY.-At the marriage of the Princess Royal, in 1858, the Bible Society presented a Bible to Her Royal Highness, and quite recently they have sent another Bible to the Prince and Princess, handsomely bound, in commemoration of their silver wedding. In accepting the gift, the Princess made many inquiries as to the progress of Bible work in different lands. The Crown Prince stated that he had bought a Bible from the Society's stall at the Paris Exhibition of 1867, which had been his companion through the Franco-Prussian war; and, on first going to sea, his second son, Prince Henry, had begged the Book, that it might thenceforth be his fellow-traveller upon the waters.

THE PARCELS POST will come into operation in June next. The vast preparations necessary for the proper working thereof prevent it coming earlier into use.

A CHIMNEY WORTH SWEEPING.-The chimney of the Royal Mint at Berlin has recently been swept, when no less than four pounds of gold was collected from amongst the soot.

PASTOR CHINIQUY, formerly a Roman Catholic priest, but now an energetic Protestant minister, 18 on a visit to England, having come from Canada, although seventy-four years of age, to testify against the iniquities of Popery, and thus help those who are waging war against "The Beast." May the Lord give him great

success.

A MONARCH'S DIARY.-For nearly fifty years the Emperor of Germany has carefully noted down with his own hand the events of each day. Every morning a fresh sheet of paper is placed on the Emperor's desk, headed with a text and the date. Already the diary forms several volumes, and bids fair to be one of the greatest historical treasures of the age.

A MOVING BOG.-A large bog in the vicinity of Castlerea, Ireland, has lately been advancing rapidly towards that town. Several thousand acres of land are submerged, mills are stopped, bridges are choked up, and traffic on the road from Ballinagara to Castlerea has been suspended. The bog at Baslick, which moved some time ago, also breaking up in several places.

UNEXPECTED FORTUNE.-Although inquiries are being pursued in Ireland for a young woman who, when a child, was deserted and taken to the poorhouse, but is now heiress to an immense fortune, no positive trace of her has been found. It is said that £2,000 is offered for reliable information, and it is believed that a domestic servant named Le Mairs will turn out to be the heiress to £10,000 a year.

CHANGES FOR THE BETTER.-An establishment for the production of cheap Bibles for general distribution now occupies the ground in Scotland on which stood the Priory from which, in the reign of Henry VIII., the Pope's Legate published a Bull against the printing of the Scriptures. The old slave market at Zanzibar, where formerly thirty thousand slaves were sold annually, has been transformed into the mission premises of a society started in 1859, at the suggestion of Dr. Livingstone.

"

BOOKS RECEIVED.-" Eleventh Annual Report of the Bethesda Mission, Portsmouth.”This is a praiseworthy undertaking, conducted by Commander B. H. Key, Downham, St. Edward's Road, Portsea, and we hope the Lord will honour it with great prosperity. "The Regular Baptist Magazine" (America), “The Banner of Truth" (New York), “The Witness (Sydney), "The Scotsman." "Why the Chapel was Built; or, The Stir made by the Gospel in a Country Town" (Price 6d. W. Wileman, 34, Bouverie Street, London, E.C.; or E. Wilmshurst, Blackheath).—We should like to hear of many such soul-animating stirs taking place in our day as the one here recorded. Buy the little book, and read it. It is full of interest.

PRINTING FUND.-The Editor tenders his sincere and hearty thanks to those warm-hearted helpers who sympathize with his endeavour to scatter broadcast suitable reading for young and old, and he hopes that, while atheists and Romanists are energetically working against the best interests of the rising race, and of men in general, all lovers of truth will strive to help to circulate that teaching which accords with the Word of God. The following are gratefully acknow ledged :-A Friend, 20s.; Mr. A. Broomfield, 20s.; Mr. Dadswell, 4s. 6d. ; F. Moody (stamps), Is.; Mr. Hare, 4s.

AGED PILGRIMS' FRIEND SOCIETY.-Mrs. Walker, 21s. The Editor hopes that all those friends who can do so will favour him with their votes next June, in behalf of a needy candidate for the Ten Guinea Pension.

As the Affirmation Bill may not have come before the House of Commons for the second reading by the time our Magazines appear, we hope that all lovers of God, of His truth and cause, will unite in petitioning against the obnoxious measure, and in entreating the Lord to arise, and in mercy prevent our senators from adopting means to facilitate the admission of avowed atheists into our national councils. If those who contemn God are thus pandered to, we may expect His frown.

OUR ANNUAL VOLUMES.-These, we are happy to say, find increasing favour year by year, and we trust our friends will endeavour to make them known still more widely, as the greater the sale, the more we shall be encouraged. Both GLEANER and SOWER form excellent gift books, as they contain an abundance of useful reading. There are many families to whom a volume might be useful, were they presented with one.

BACK NUMBERS OF GLEANER AND SOWER can be had at three shillings per hundred ; or we would forward them to schools and other places, for free distribution, where we know they would be gladly received, if friends would kindly remit the cost of a few to us for this purpose.
