PEDAGOGICAL SLÖJD INSTITUTE.

Southeast Corner of Madison St. and Fifth Ave.,

· CHICAGO.

LOJD is a hand craft or educational work in wood. In this system there are fifty models for primary grades of children from five to ten years of age; fifty models for secondary and grammar grades for children above ten years of age. The models are so arranged that the principles of mechanics follow in sequence. Progressive nstruction in the use of tools is given, while the work advances from the simple to the lifficult. The system is founded on pedagogical rules. The exercises adapted to the mental and physical development of the pupil, so he is always able to make the model imself. He thas develops independence and self-reliance.

The model series consists of useful articles in order to increase the child's interest in the work and to give him the habit of useful activity.

Slöjd develops practical intelligence, the ability to judge and utilize circumstances, gives skill to the hands and trains the eyes to see, to calculate and judge. I. fortifies the habit of self-activity, inculcates the importance, charm and advantages of order, eatness and accuracy; cultivates diligence, perseverance and circumspection.

In

Slöjd broadens the mind, and is at the same time a good diversion for exaggerated mental effort. It excites love for work in general and respect for physical labor. leveloping habits of concentration it has no equal.

The Slöjd is a good outlet for the early awakened activity of the child, prevents mischief of the little ones and immorality and bad habits of the older ones and idleness of all. It promotes morality by leading the natural activity of the child into healthy channels. It really converts destruction into construction. It also develops physical strength, bringing into action every muscle of the body.

Slöjd is a connecting link between the Kindergarten and the Manual Training school. It is especially adapted to secondary and grammar grades. Slöjd is adopted .niversally and successfully in the Schools of Scandinavia and Finland, and there is a growing interest and demand for it in this country. Teachers are wanted in many parts of the country, and positions could be obtained at once for all fitted to teach the system. Here is a field for both men and women seeking employment.

To go through both of the model series takes for one ordinary worker about one year, on a calculation of one term to the series of Primary Grade, two terms to the series of Grammar Grade, with four hours daily work.

Teachers of both sexes are trained in the Institute. A certificate is given when one has completed one or more of the model series, learned to grind and adjust a set of tools, attended a course of lectures on the Pedagogics of Slöjd, and given some ime to instructing pupils.

The school year will be divided into three terms of twelve weeks each. irst Term Opens September 9th, 1890.
