THE SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH.

Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity.- King David.

HE accompanying photo-zinc etching is a very accurate representation of the Second Baptist Church house of worship, corner of Cambridge and Fourth Streets. It is a solidly built brick structure, centrally located and conveniently arranged. In its tower hangs one of the sweetest toned bells in all Cambridge. The Church was organized with twenty members in September 1827. They have occupied their present location throughout their entire history. The first meeting-house, a small, unpretentious wooden chapel, was destroyed by fire in 1837. The present building was erected the same year, and remodeled in 1868.

The Church has had in all thirteen regularly settled pastors, whose labors here and elsewhere mark them as chosen men of GOD, well-equipped for the work to which they were called. The longest pastorate the Church has known was that of Rev. Wm. Leverett, the fifth pastor, beginning October 4, 1840, and continuing nearly ten years. It was during this pastorate that the Church enjoyed one of the most extensive revivals with which it has ever been blest. Another notable event that took place under the leadership of Mr. Leverett was the liquidation of a heavy debt which had been incurred in the rebuilding of their house, and which had been a very serious obstacle in the way of their prosperity.

Up to the present time there have been received into

the fellowship of the Church 826 members, and more than half of this number, 487, were by baptism. The present number enrolled is 258. Quite a goodly number of efficient minisrers have gone out from the membership of this Church. Among them we find the name of Rev. Joseph G. Binney, D.D., who, beside twenty-one years of successful service as pastor and college president in this country, spent twenty-six years in missionary work in India.

Rev. Geo. L. Wrenn, the present acting pastor, began his labors with the Church the first Sunday of September, 1886, and since that time there has been a forward movement along the various lines of endeavor, with very encouraging results. Thirty in all, many of them heads of families, have been added to the membership; there has been a marked growth in the attendance at all the services; and during the past summer, at an expenditure of some $700, the main audience room has been thoroughly renovated, in the way of frescoing, painting, and recarpeting, making it one of the most attractive auditoriums in the city.

The Sunday School, under the superintendency of Mr. Geo. H. Howard, is in a prosperous condition, with a total membership of 236. It has always been a valuable auxiliary to the Church.

HEED how thou livest. Do not act by day

Which from the night shall drive thy peace away.
In months of sun so live that months of rain
Shall still be happy. Evermore restrain
Evil and cherish good, so shall there be
Another and a happier life for thee.

WHITTIER.
