THE HE writer of this book has had many intimations that the former "STORIES OF OLD ENGLAND" were favourably received by, or on behalf of, those for whose amusement and instruction they were intended. This new Series has, therefore, been prepared. No merit is claimed for invention in the following short histories and biographies. If there be a merit in them, it is that they are not spun out of an imaginative brain. As nearly as possible, the events described really occurred; the only transformation exercised upon them having been that of putting them into language calculated to attract and retain the attention of young readers. There are two ways of teaching almost anything, though it is sometimes difficult to make learning attractive. But there is scarcely any need that the study of history should be repulsive to a young learner At any rate, an attempt is here again made to present some historical facts in an inviting form. If this end has been attained, the effect will probably be to lead on to the study of more complete histories. This will be a good result, for it is not well to be ignorant of what |
