-The Outlook has secured the services of Mr. George Kennan, vice-president of the American Red Cross Society, as a member of its staff during the war. Mr. Kennan is the most distinguished American traveler of the time, and his studies of the conditions in Siberia have had a worldwide reading and have revolutionized the Russian exile system. He will study conditions in Cuba and elsewhere, as may be desirable, and report to the readers of The Outlook in a series of weekly articles which are certain to be of surpassing interest, and to afford a graphic narrative of the progress of events.

-In 1861, the Atlantic Monthly showed its spirit by putting upon its covers and title pages the Flag of the Union, in place of the effigy of John Winthrop, its original emblem, while its real patriotism was evidenced by the character of the contributions which enriched its pages. In earnest of which, it is only necessary to recall that Paul Revere's Ride, Barbara Frietchie, Our Orders, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, The Man Without a Country, and the Bigelow Papers (among many others), first appeared in the Atlantic. In the number for June the Atlantic published the same flag on its cover, and gives the place of honor to a calm, judicial, but patriotic summary of our Cuban relations with Spain; the causes of the present war and the problems likely to arise from it. The Atlantic finds the collision to have heen inevitable between the mediæval methods of Spain and the highly civilized ideals and strong ethical sentiment of the United States.

Although this book contains much matter taken from the author's well known "Exposition of the Constitution of the United States," it is so greatly changed as to be virtually a new book, and it is called by a different name so as to avoid confusion with the older book.

With an addendum on Local Government in Kansas, written by a leading teacher of that state, and with some changes and omissions the new book has already been

In ordering be careful to send for Wright's Civil Government, as "Wright's Combined Constitutions of the United States and of Wisconsin," will still be sold.

All orders from Wisconsin for "Wright's Civil Government" will be taken by us to be for the Wisconsin Edition, unless it is expressly stated that the Wisconsin Edition is not wished. mends itself at once as a very useful manual skillfully prepared. It is based on the study of nature as she presents herself in all her richness and variety, instead of a study of classified specimens such as is more commonly undertaken. Such titles as About Home, In the Meadow, Prairie Flowers in August, The Woods in Bloom, Animal Life in the Woods, The Woods in Autumn, etc., reveal the purpose to make excursions the actual basis of study, and to take some natural whole for closer observation. The oneness of nature is thus brought to view, and a genuine child interest awakened which forms the proper foundation for more systematic scientific study. The latter is not ignored in the volume, but made incidental rather than the guiding clue. The style of the book is fresh and inspiring, its descriptions clear and full, and its illustrations numerous. The author is instructor in nature study in the St. Paul schools. We recommend the book to the attention of our readers.

-NATURE STUDY IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. Reader, by Mrs. Lucy L. W. Wilson (181 pp: 35c.), is an attractive collection of myths, stories, and poems relating to nature suitable for little readers. The stories are told not only simply but briefly, and the poems are from the best authors. With its numerous illustrations and its clear open print the book is a very attractive one, and will happily introduce young readers to both nature and literature while they are learning the art of reading.

-THE PRIMARY PUBLIC SCHOOL ARITHMETIC, based on McLellan and Dewey's "Psychology of Number," by J. A. McClellan and A. F. Ames (265 pp.; 50c.), interests as an endeavor to apply systematically a body of psychological doctrine. It will be remembered that counting is relied upon by Dr. Dewey as fundamental, and made vital by applications in measurement. It does not, however, neglect ratio. This in the beginning is implicit rather than explicit. The application of number in measurement prepares the way for an easy transition to ratio, as in fractions and percentage. It is true that the main difficulty of pupils is not with the process, but to determine what process is applicable. To overcome this a large number of concrete constructive exercises is provided, to develop power of intelligent application of processes to the problems of life. The book has been subjected to classroom trial in several schools while it was in preparation, and the unanimously favorable reports indicate its adaptation to actual school work. The wide interest among teachers in the "psychology of Number'' assures for it a ready and extensive reception. Ginn & Co.

-A TEXT-BOOK OF PHYSICS, by G. A. Wentworth and G. A. Hill, (440 pp.; $1.25), lays great emphasis upon the fundamental principles of the science, likely to be neglected in the interest awakened by the new and brilliant applications developed in the past fifty years. Much space is devoted in this volume to the statement, proof and application of the parellelogram law, the law of moments, the laws of Pascal, Archimedes, and Boyle, the laws of uniformly accelerated motion, Newton's laws of motion, and the laws of energy. Its position on laboratory work is thus described: "Laboratory experiments, requiring simple apparatus only, are described for the purpose of verifying laws previously stated, not for discovering laws." The book is noteworthy also because of the numerical exercises for practice in applying the principles of physics to the practical problems 5.00 of life.

-AN ADVANCED ARITHMETIC for high schools, normal schools and academies, by G. A. Wentworth (400 pp.; $1. 10), strikes one as especially rich in problems, and problems of a practical nature, related to other useful knowledge. Decimals are early introduced, and with them the metric system, which is rapidly gaining ground so that, from the laboratories of scientists and from international transactions, it seems destined soon to make its way into common use. The addition of logarithms to an arithmetic, is commendaable. The book is designed for advanced students and will be found well adapted to their needs.

-NEW SCHOOL ALEGBRA, by G. A. Wentworth (407 pp.; $1.25), is characterized by admirable clearness and simplicity of treatment of principles, with an abundance of ex
