PREFACE

volume is an attempt to supply nd visitors to, Oxford with something e City and University than is fairly ope of a Guidebook. It is not an much less a history, but aims at supplynd to the more obvious scenes which as we thread the maze of academic growth of the City and University, tudies and of student life in medieval res of historical interest, the features sh individual Colleges, are taken in a perusal of these pages after hours may serve to fix in the mind some worth remembering, when the crowd s to fade away.

arge output of books about Oxford in -1913, which are reviewed and dise Oxford Magazine of Feb. 21, 28, ; but none seems to fill the place rk. Sketches of modern Oxford are ter's powers, but they abound on those who want them (see the list Te). So, too, references and bibliocupy too much space, but the writer > supply any information which may by readers.

PREFACE

Chapter IX. is apologized for beforehand it is not part of the plan. The graver parts may pass: the would-be humorous parts cannot escape notice from critics who write before dinner instead of after. There are more Heracliti than Democriti, more who laugh at nothing than who laugh at everything.

THE Second Issue is corrected, revised, and slightly enlarged. The first edition consisted of 2000 copies. I am grateful for corrections from too many friends to name here, but especially to the Warden of Keble, Sir Charles Mallet, Mr. E. H. New, Mr. S. G. Owen, the Provost of Queen's and Bishop Strong.
