Preface.

TWELVE months have elasped since the Proprietors of the Pocket Magazine gave a pledge to the Public, with respect to the future embellishments of the work. They trust that they will now be considered as having redeemed that pledge. At the same time, they owe it to truth to say, that their exertions have been amply rewarded by the continually increasing patronage which has been extended to them. For the marked favour which their efforts have met with they are grateful; and they will endeavour to manifest their sense of it, by omitting nothing which can contribute to render the Pocket Magazine still more worthy of the rank which it holds among the monthly periodicals. All that the artist, the engraver, and the printer, can do, to ensure the beauty of its appearance, they are resolved shall be done.

The Editor, on his part, begs leave to return his sincere thanks to his kind Correspondents,

who have at once assisted in lightening his labours, and giving a value to the Magazine. It is scarcely necessary to add, that he relies on the continuance of their aid. He hopes, too, that, in the next volume, he shall greet not only all his old friends, with their old faces, but also a large accession of new ones, Those who think proper to send their Contributions to him, even though their productions should fail of obtaining admission, may at least depend upon being treated with candour and gentlemanly feeling. Though he can, and will, chastise brutish insolence and presumptuous vanity, he would not give pain to modest inability, and would gladly lend his help, such as it is, to foster the spark of talent into a bright and lasting flame.
