Mr. URBAN, Birmingham, Jan. 29. IN addition to the topographical notices of Hurft-per-point, co. Suffex, by I. E. in p. 1112 of your last volume (which begins rather abruptly with the Domefday account from Henshall and Wilkinson's tranflation, and extracts from the Magna Britannia) I beg leave to prefent you with a view of the church, &c. (Plate 1.) together with the monumental infcriptions, and a few remarks relative to the place and neighbourhood.

The church confifts of a nave, with gallery at Weft end, South aile and gallery, a fmall North tranfept, and two chancels; that which ranges with the South aile is called the Danny Chancel. At the Weft end is a fubflantial tower, containing fix bells, a clock, and a fet of chimes (but this laft harmonious musician through age and infirmity is now filent), above which rifes a wooden shingled fpire of confiderable height.

A pifcina and ftone feat on the South fide of the chancel are fhewn in the Plate : as is alfo the font, which feems very antient, and is, perhaps, the only relick of the Church mentioned in Domefday; fee the Plate.

Infcriptions on mural monuments in the chancel.

body and mind hardly to be precedented; but happyer ftill in being untainted with thofe vices which almost universally prevailed, and adorned with vertues which were equally neglected.

In his infancy, and even in the midft of anarchy and confufion, he imbibed loyal and orthodox principles. For thefe he fought no recompence, but that of a good confcience, when our Church and Monarchy were restored.

In these he perfevered to the laft, unmoved by fear of danger or hope of fordid gain, with a steadiness and refolution Imitated by few. Such were his publick His private life was one continued fcene of hofpitality, temperance, devotion, and charity.

vertues.

He marryed Philadelphia daughter of Sir John Stapley, of Patcham, bart.; and left iffue Barbara, marryed to Henry Campion, efq. of Combwell in Goudhurft, in the county of Kent.

In the chancel are alfo interred the bodys of Philadelphia, Frances, William, and Barbara, children of the faid Henry and Barbara, who died in their infancy.

In a vault at Goodhurst Church is de pofited the body of Peter Campion, fecond fon of Henry and Barbara, who died on the 8th Auguft, 1723, in the 17th year of his age. An early piety, a ftrict regard to truth, and all other marks of an excellent difpofition, endeared him to all that knew him during his fhort ftay in this life, and have left them the undoubted comfort of his being translated to a better.

Reader! bewail thy country's lofs in the death of Henry Campion. In his life admire a character moft amiable and venerable, of the Friend, the Gentleman, and Chriftian. Amidft the praise of abilities which would adorn the highest ftation, he fought domeftic happiness in retirement from the bufy world: fuch was his prudence and modefty. To excel in acts of piety and beneficence, in the exercife of every patriarchal virtue, this his ambition, this his unenvied honour. His charities to the poor, fecret and filent as the dew of Heaven. difpenfed a bleffing well placed, which the profufion of greater wealth feldom beftows. In his behaviour he maintained a perfonal dignity which no pomp of titles could confer; a dignity founded in true greatnefs of mind. A minifter of justice and peace to his neighbours, acting with an authority which the King's commiffion cannot give, the reputation of fuperior knowledge and integrity,

tian piety fanctified every accomplishment of the gentleman. For the public benefit of pofterity, may the memory of his example be perpetual!

He died Ap. 14, an. Dom. 1761, æt. 81. He married Barbery daughter and heirefs of Peter Courthope, efq. of Danny, who is buried in the fame grave; a woman truly pious and virtuous, an affectionate wife and parent," a generous and charitable neighbour. They left iffue one fon, William Campion, efq. of Danny, and one daughter, Catherine, married to George Courthop, efq. of Whyligh in Suffex.

In this chancel lie the remains of Wil liam Campion (fon of Henry and Barbara) late of Danny, efq. who died 1ft of Aug. 1778, in the 71ft year of his age; and of Elizabeth his wife, the daughter of Edw. Partheriche, of Ely in the county of Cambridge, efq. who died 6th of Oct. 1768, in the 61ft year of her age. He was a man of lively and ftrong parts, improved by extenfive claffical learning, and an intimate knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, his favourite ftudy: and the a woman of excellent underftanding and truly difcrete conduct. Both exemplary for Chriftian faith, devotion, and charity. This marble is erected to their memory as the best of parents.

rietta, wife of Henry Courthope Campion, of Danny, efq. and daughter of Sir John Heathcote, of Normanton in the county of Rutland, bart. who died 6th Feb. 1771, in the 34th year of her age. She was truly exemplary in the discharge of all her filial duties; a kind and affectionate wife, a tender and careful parent, a fincere, devout, and charitable Chriftian.

In the fame vault are depofited the remains of Bridget, only daughter of Henry Courthope and Henrietta Campion, who died 13th Feb. 1797, in the 28th year of her age. In times too much addicted to diffipation and trifling amufements, her life was fpent in one continued courfe of improvement in ufeful knowledge and other valuable attainments, and as conftant a practice of the Heavenly precepts, from a full conviction of the Divine Truth of the religion fhe profeffed. As the was accuftomed to dedicate the firft part of every day to the ftudy of her Chriftian duty, fo the paffed the whole in a ferious performance of it, being uniformly actuated in her conduct by a fincere piety and devotion of heart, a ftrict and invariable regard to truth, Fear of God, love of mankind, in the most diffident opinion of her own abiAuenced all his actions; a fincere Chriflities and merit, a fingular filial affection

and

and compliance, a kind and beneficent attention to the poor, a truly juft and generous concern for the happiness of every rank and condition of her fellow-creatures. Such were the virtues, which, together with an easy, humble, and obliging deportment, endeared her in this life to all who knew her, and are now the source at once of the deepect regret, and the moft confolatory reflection, to her afflicted furviving friends.

6.

Near this place lie the remains of Prifcilla Campion, daughter of William and Prifcilla Campion, of Lewes in this county. She was born April ye 10th, 1781, and died Feb. ye 6th, 1795. Her modeft, humble, fweet, and docile mind, her compaffionate and affectionate heart, which endeared her to all who knew her, gave the faireft promises of a life not unworthy of the amiable and excellent virtues of the much-beloved and refpected Houfe of Danny. Let this marble remain the laft tribute of affection from her afflicted parents, whofe fond hopes, with respect to this life moft untimely blafted, ftill look up to that fure and certain hope which

maketh not ashamed.
