THE ENGLISH RURAL SPELLING-BOOK, WITH EASY AND PROGRESSIVE LESSONS; INTENDED AS AN INTRODUCTION ΤΟ THE SPELLING AND READING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE; AND TO THE FIRST PRINCIPLES OF THE PRACTICAL AND SCIENTIFIC BY BIBI CUTHBERT W. JOHNSON, ESQ., F.RENV LONDON: JAMES RIDGWAY, 169, PICCADILLY. TO BE HAD OF ALL BOOKSELLERS. A LIBERAL ALLOWANCE FOR SCHOOLS. 1846. PREFACE. THE objects with which this little work has been written will, its Author trusts, be seen in its pages. They are to inculcate useful, every-day principles, and facts, when teaching even very small words and sentences. He has laboured to accomplish this purpose, keeping constantly in view the works of God, in the phenomena of daily life, and of the vegetable creation. During this attempt he has earnestly endeavoured to omit no opportunity of inculcating the great truth, that all knowledge is unavailing, which has not an intimate reference to the wisdom and goodness of God, and of his revealed will. To the teachers of youth this work is dedicated; it is for them that the notes dispersed throughout its pages have been principally intended, and to them the Author will be most grateful for any suggestions for its improvement. 14, GRAY'S INN SQUARE, JUNE, 1846. |
