The Duke Thereupon by the King's Com of Suffolk mandment ftept up the Duke of the Car. Suffolk, and with a haughty Countenance uttered these Words :

It was never thus in England until we had Cardinals amongst us. Which Words were fet forth with fuch Vehemency, that all Men marvailed what he intended, the Duke further expreffing fome Opprobrious Words.

My Lord Cardinal perceiving his Vehemency, foberly faid, Sir, of all Men in this Realm you have least cause to difpraise Cardinals; for if I poor Cardinal had not been, you fhould not at this prefent have had a Head on your Shoulders, wherewith to make such a brag in dispute of us, who wish you no harm; nei ther have given you fuch caufe to be offended with us. The King thinking it would be too long e'er it would be determined, fent an Ambassador to the Pope to perfwade him to fhew fo much Favour to his Majefty, as that it might be fooner determined.

On this Embaffage went Doctor Stephen Gardener, then called by the Dr. Gar. name of Doctor Steven, Secretary Ambaffato the King, afterwards Bishop of dor to the Winchester. This Ambaffador stay- Pope. ed there till the latter end of Summer, of whofe return you shall here after hear.
