In 1776, he published a new edition of his chefs-book.

In 1779, at London, he fet to mufic the Carmen Seculare of Hcrace, which was performed three nights with great fuccefs at Freemafon's-Hall, and afterwards at Paris. The emprefs of Ruffia required, and obtained a copy in fcore from the author, for which the generously rewarded him.

In 1765, Tom Jones, which was damned the first night; but the following year it was repeated with great fuccefs. In 1766, emboldened by his increafing popularity, he aimed at an entire change of the national tale for the Arench mufic, and accordingly compofed a tragic opera, entitled, Eruelinda Princefs of Norway, without mythology, and with recitative, after the Italian manner, intermixed with airs. This The prefent king of Prufia, when was reprefented at the French ope-prince-royal, was likewife very lira, and notwith landing the cabals beral to the author, who had fent of the nobility, who were bigotted him a copy of this piece of mufic. to the old mulic, the bad finging of the actors and actreffes, and the indifferent execution of the orchestra; notwithstanding the obstacles thrown by the dancers in the way of a performance, which formed a new and interefting fpectacle; this piece was played eight fucceffive nights, and then dropt. This opera was again performed with better fingers, and a better band in 1776 and 1777, with great fuccefs.

It is now in the prefs at Paris, (1787) and will be fpecdily published, dedicated to the emprefs, with an engraven title-page, reprefenting the arms of Ruffia.

In 1780. he compofed a Lyric tragedy, called Perfeus, which was performed at the French opera,

He was again in England, during the winters of 1781, 1782, and 1783. In 1785, he brought out at Fontainebleau, Themistocles, a Lyric tragedy, which was afterwards. performed at Paris; and Profper & Vincent, or l'Amicié au Village, reprefented both at Fontainebleau, and at the Italian comedy.
