Proctor, James Smith, Caroline Anne Southey, Jane Taylor, Alfred Tennyson, Alaric Watts, John Wolcot. As in the former, so in this edition, some may not find a favorite author noticed, nor favorite pieces of many whose names do appear ; but they who can best estimate the nature of such a labor, and the embarrassment which must have been constantly felt from the very richness and variety of the materials, will be the most ready to make all allowance for any errors of omission or of commission. But one thing I can truly say, I have endeavored to represent the views and feelings of every author inserted, fairly and honestly; and where any one has shown that his heart was particularly and deeply interested in any one great subject, I have felt it my duty, without fear or favor, to let his views on that subject appear. In conclusion, I have only to say that I can wish no greater favor shown to this work than the “Compendium" has received ; and having taken every pains to make it as perfect as I could, not to please any clique or sect, or to favor any particular latitude or special market, but to promote the cause of sound learning and education in harmony with pure Christian morals, the best interests of humanity, and the cause of universal truth, I now commit it to the judgment of an intelligent public.
