PREFACE.

THIS little work is written in no spirit of controversy. It is not an attempt to reconcile Science and Religion. The author does not believe there is any necessary conflict between them, but that each has a realm of its own-each is capable of sustaining itself—and that, clearly interpreted, each may contribute something to the other, without invalidating its own premises or subverting its own conclusions.

He leaves the popular theories, therefore, to fall into line with each other or out of line, as the case may be, without any attempt to place a forced meaning on a word, or to draw any conclusions from scientific data that ascertained facts will not reasonably warrant.
