PREFACE.

The Compiler, at the risk, perhaps, of being deemed egotistical, feels amply justified in noting the fact that the interest and popularity of this series has steadily increased with each succeeding issue.

In this, the sixth volume, will be found several pieces, for which frequent inquiries have been made, that have never before appeared in print, and are now presented for the first time, through the courtesy of obliging friends

and correspondents on both sides of the Atlantic, who possessed the original manuscripts.

It is frequently difficult to obtain deservedly popular selections in their original integrity, and the Compiler will always be glad to receive corrections of any inaccuracies that may unavoidably occur.
