both at home and abroad; that we allow of Popish massing priests in our ministry, and disallow of ministers made in a reformed Church."
At length, by an Act of Parliament (13th Elizabeth, cap. 12) it was especially enacted that Presbyterians shall not hold benefices in England, until they had subscribed, not to all the thirty-nine Articles, but only to those which concern "the confession of the true Christian faith, and the doctrine of the Sacraments." And so matters remained for ninety years. Those who respect our Canons would do well to remember that they are still bound to pray, whenever they make use of the bidding-prayer, as our Ancient Universities do every Lord'sday for the Churches of England, Ireland, and Scotland-the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.
We must not close without calling attention to a week which the Protestant Alliance invites us to set apart for prayer. The members of the Church of England are happily provided already with stated seasons for special prayer upon all the great doctrines and duties which the Gospel enforces:-Advent, for the first and second comings of Christ; Christmas, for the proclamation of the glorious Gospel of the blessed God to all the world; the Epiphany, for Missionary work; Easter, for meditation on the death, and sufferings, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus; and so on throughout the year.
Still, as we are commanded to pray always, lifting up holy hands, without wrath or doubting, we receive the invitation in the spirit in which it is offered, and commend the week of prayer the first week in January to the devout attention of our readers.
A LAY SUBSCRIBER pleads with some earnestness for a larger column of intelligence. To us this is very gratifying, and it is only what we receive monthly almost from various quarters. We will endeavour to comply, and, whatever else is omitted, give at least another page to our last article.
