PREFACE.

THE object of the Editor in this compilation has been to furnish young readers with a series of narratives in history and biography, calculated to interest them as well as to instruct.

History has been said to be, "Philosophy teaching by example," and biography may be considered the truest and most attractive species of reading.

It is the hope of the Editor that this little work will have the effect of inciting the youthful mind to the study of both departments of literature, so essential to the attainment of a good and sound education.

In the following pages are many curious details, and while information is conveyed, the contents will be found to be of an entertaining and agreeable
