PREFACE.

THE main object of this work is to present in a series of brief and vivid pictures the progressive stages and most momentous facts of England's history. It is hoped that in this way the young student may be enabled to form some notion of each great event as a whole; which it is so difficult to do from the arbitrary divisions of reigns.

The causes and consequences of warfare; the incidents which help to realize the actual life of bygone times; and those changes-religious, political, and social, the most marked and enduring in their effects -have been dwelt on rather than the narratives of wars and courts. There has also been an endeavour to link our own history with those great European events of which it formed a part.

Careful reference has been made to many of the most valuable of recent historical works.
