withstanding, we fear it will not win much favour in this country. It is a heavy, dull performance, having neither originality nor freshness, though orthodox in teaching, scholarly in treatment, and methodical in arrangement.

Illustrations of Fulfilled Prophecy. By J. ROBINSON GREGORY. (London: T. Woolmer.)

It is the fashion in some quarters to make little of the predictive element in Holy Scripture, and by not a few it is denied altogether This little work, therefore, is timely and well adapted to its purpose. It is not intended for professional students of the Bible, but for general readers and thoughtful persons with little leisure for study and none for learned discussion. Prophecy and its fulfilment are contrasted as plainly and simply as possible, and so as to allow of pictorial illustration. It is by far the best Compend on the subject we know of, and many of the testimonies adduced to the present condition of cities and countries the destiny of which the prophets pronounced are not to be found even in Dr. Keith's large work, or any other single volume with which we are acquainted.

The Life of Christ.

By Dr. BERNARD WEISS, Counsellor of the Consistory, and Professor of Theology in Berlin. Translated by M. G. HOPE. Vol. II. (Edinburgh: T. & T. Clark.)

The author belongs to what is called "The Critical School," which means that he applies Rationalistic principles of interpretation to the Gospel History. To some this will doubtless be a recommendation, though to all who believe in the plenary inspiration of Holy Scripture it will be "a stumbling block and an offence." Keeping this in mind, however, and the reader on his guard against the "free handling " method, the work will repay careful study. It deals with what may be called the "inner life" of our Lord far more thoroughly and completely than either Archdeacon Farrar's or Dr. Geikie's. Indeed, in the characteristics of suggestiveness and profound insight into the deeper things of Christ's history on earth, this "Life" has no equal. Outlines of Prophetic Truth: Viewed Practically and Experimentally

in the Light of the Divine Word. From Creation to Redemption. By ROBERT BROWN. (London: S. W. Partridge & Co.)

This is a large and comprehensive work, combining the characteristics of what was formerly called "a body of divinity" with those of a Commentary. It embraces a vast variety of subjects; for it may be said to traverse the whole field of Divine revelation, and on every page gives evidence of patient, reverent, and earnest search after the mind of God. The work is manifestly the production of an able and a devout student of Scripture, and cannot fail to instruct and profit those who look to the inspired Word for full and complete guidance, even although some of the author's views and interpretations may appear fanciful.

The Lord's Supper Historically Considered.
JACOB, D.D. (London: Henry Frowde.)

By the Rev. G. A.

This little work presents a short but comprehensive view of the History of the Lord's Supper from the commencement of the Christian Church to the present time. It is by far the best handbook upon the subject we know of.

Jesus, the World's Saviour. By GEORGE C. LORIMER, D.D. (Chicago: S. C. Griggs & Co.)

The author's avowed aim is "to present a series of pictures of the Nazarene, and to unfold such distinct aspects of His earthly ministry as may best meet the religious views of this generation." In Dr. Lorimer's estimation too much attention has usually been given in the portraiture of the life of Jesus to sceptics and controversialists, and too little to the significance which His Word and works have for the perplexed and those seeking the highest type of righteousness. This is a book which holds the interest in reading, and prompts to a cordial recommendation to the attention of others.

The Word and Works of God. BY GILBERT S. BAILEY. (Philadelphia: American Baptist Publication Society.)

The aim of the author is to set forth in popular form the evidence which establishes the divine origin and authority of the Bible. Applying the accepted "laws of evidence" he shows the nature and limitations of proofs which must decide the questions involved. In citing the sources whence such proofs may be drawn, religious experience is properly given the preference. Personal experience is indubitable and defies refutation. The knowledge it furnishes carries its own confirmation.

History and the fulfilment of prophecy contribute corroborative proofs bearing seals which can neither be loosened nor defaced. The internal evidence afforded by the peculiarities of the Bible is such as baffles the hostility of its assailants. As the bitterest enemies of Christianity now draw upon natural science for their chief support, our author devotes the larger portion of his pages to proving that when the Bible and Nature-the material universe -are correctly understood, a complete harmony is apparent, the Bible aiding men in interpreting Nature, and Nature confirming, by surprising testimonies, the divine claims of the Bible.
