Chrißke, der du bift tag und licht.

1.C. of light, CHR

HRIST, everlasting Source

All things lie naked in thy fight; Thou Splendor of thy Father's face, Teach us to tread the paths of grace. 2. We come t'implore thy fov'reign might,

To keep thy Flock this inftant night
From all the wiles of th'enemy,
O Father of eternity.

3. Remove our finful drowsiness ; Shield us, when Satan would opprefs; -The fleeble flesh keep chafte and pure,

And let us reft in Thee fecure.

4. And when our eyes are bound in fleep,

The lamp of faith ftill burning keep;
And, oh, fuftain us while we reft,
And fin remove, fo are we bleft.
5. Great Guardian of thy Chriftian
flock,

Thy prefence be our faving rock;
Thy Agony and bloody fweat
Be our fupport in ev'ry Strait.

6. Forget not, Lord, the pain and

woe,

That faft purfue us here below: 9

thou didst bleed :

This was thy Father's firm decree, When all our fouls he gave to thee. 2. So we in thy bleft Name now fleep,

Because the Angels the watch keep.
The bleffed holy Trinity,
Be praised to eternity.

5. See we the body lie a while Senfelefs and void of honour; The fame in fparkling Life will fmile,

Beyond the former tenour.

6. Ages will come, when warmth again

Shall fill the Tent deferted; A glow and strength, which no more

can

Be by Decays fubverted. 7.Why then. furvivors! do you moan With unbelieving Dirges? What wifely is contriv'd and done, Your Grief with error charges. 8. Let therefore all repinings ceafe; Why should to blind refentment Ev'n Mothers o'er their Babes give place,

Since death is life's Amendment? 9. Thus fhrivel'd feeds, dead and forgot,

Break thro' the ground with Verdure,

Exhibiting upon the spot

Their Plant in priftine order. 10. Now, Earth! receive, and in thy lap

What's here intrufted, cherish: It is a precious human Shape, Relicks that fhall not perish.

11. The house of fuch a Soul 't has been,

Breath'd by the great Creator; Wisdom and Flame have dwelt therein

Of Chrift th'Illuminator. 12. Thou cover the committed clay! The Potter's mild remembrance Will fure require another day

What bore his own Resemblance. 13. But whilft the mould'ring Body thou,

Lord, art to Honour shaping, Whither doft thou appoint to go

The Soul from thence efcaping? 14. In thy Words, Chrift! we place belief,

Who, when thou death o'erthrew-
eft,

In thy retinue took'st the Thief,
Where thou a paffage kneweft.
15. The lucid path of Paradife
Is to Believers open'd;
Which, elfe the Sword to man denies
Since what in Eden happen'd.

God does a Work, no angel can
It praise enough, much less a man.
4. God takes on him our Nature bafe,
Creator dwells in creature's cafe:
He fuffers a poor Woman's heart
Humanity to him t'impart.
5. God's Word from all eternity,
He incarnates in chastity;
The Alpha and Omega, he
Takes upon him our Mifery.

6. What is Man, and what are his deeds,

That God for him his Son will needs Give up; what ground had we or claim

Thus t'intereft the God fupreme ? 7.Unhappy folk! who flighting thee, Scorn thy Good-will continually, Nor listen to the Son his Voice; The rod divine is but their choice. 8. Man, why fo void of fenfe doft prove,

Tow'rds thy King's Entry not to

move,

When he comes with humility, And ferveth thee fo faithfully! 9. Receive him well this very day, Yield him to thy Heart a free way, So will he come to take his Place, And let thy heart enjoy his grace. 10. Submit t'his Wifdom reafon's pow'r

In this fo precious Grace's hour; Thy righteous works fubmit and thee

To his primeval Sanctity.

11. To the Lord God in Father's throne,

And likewife to his only Son,
To th'holy Ghoft in unity,
All Praife and Honour ever be !

ET us fing joyful and unan'moufly, And pafs our time right happily, With Things divine us edify.

2. God's Word hath been in the divine Effence,

Before any thing did commence ; Of which John gives intelligence. 3. This Word is the true God and God's 's own Son,

Th'only begotten in th'highest throne, This teftifies the third Perfon;

4. Firft by the Prophets dear and the Pfalmifts,

Then alfo by th'Evangelifts Elected, whofe Word ftill exifts. 5. Let us truft the Father and the Spirit, And on their Word ground our Faith right,

Till there we have it all in fight.
6. For now our Reason is by far too
weak,

It cannot fuch deep matters take,
And this is fo for Adam's fake.

7. Now God's Son is come, whom they did expect,

Took a Body and Soul perfect
For th'benefit of his elect;
8. Hath humbled himself deep by his
Manhood,

Without leff 'ning by't his Godhead,
And tasted our Weakness and need.
9. O man, behold the Son's great
Worthiness,

How to him with deep lowliness Angels their reverence exprefs. 10. The heav'nly Hoft do terve him and obey, His word's obey'd by wind and sea, He's dreaded much by th'Enemy.

11. He tafted forrow and great po- | Set him open all Gates,

verty,

But did it all to favour thee,

And to damp Satan's tyranny.

12. His witneffes declare him unto thee,

That thou may'ft find out, it is he Who pardons thy Iniquity.

13. Tho' he may feem to thee quite meanly now,

Yet is he very pow'rful too With many Gifts thee to endow. 14.O Jefu! who haft been from Mary born,

By thee now thine elect are borne, That they may never be forlorn. 15. Grant that they be renewed inwardly,

That they by faith betroth'd to thee, May joy here and eternally.

FAN, give due attention

Follow Chrift his dictates,
When he by Word and Writ
Comes, thee to inhabit.
5, His Love fo amazing
Effectually praifing,

Always for thy Lord's fake,
Thyfelf ftir, in Heart wake,
Till all thy Demeanour
Gives him folid pleasure.
6. Prov'st thou a good Warrior?
He'll protect thy Career,
Give eafe to thy Conscience
For thy peace's maint'nance,
To get the prize-money
Bear thee teftimony.
7. For the present suffer,
Self-will follow never;
On all sides from Satan
Harrafs'd, ne'er be beaten ;
Great good it will do thee,
To be found on Duty.
8. Then thou wilt be happy.
From all anguifh kept be:
Then, close to Him tied,
Thou'lt be glorified;

"M What was God's Intention, Thout outline the Sun-fire.

When he did his only Son
Send from the majestic Throne,
Suffer'd him to go on
With his Incarnation ?

2. He should, by thee once heard,
Make thee his own Convert;
For thy Trefpafs dying,
For thy pardon crying,
By his fervent praying
Grace to thee conveying.
3. That thou by his Spirit
Comfort might ft inherit;
That he by his Scripture
Might procure thee nurture,
And refide in thine Heart
Without any one smart.
4. To that Spirit yield thee,
And do what he will'd thee;

9. Happy he whom God takes,
Spirit's Light in him wakes;
Who believes his Saviour,
With a kind Behaviour
Serves him by his free choice;
Such one may well rejoice.

10. Well then, come dear Master !
Make us go on faster,
Doing all thy Heart's-wifh:
Then exchange this earthish,
For that Houfe, where praifing
Thee, will be unceasing.

Od's Son once defcending,
All our fouls befriending,
Here on Earth walk'd humble,
And in Figure fimple,
From fin to release us,
Which did fo opprefs us.

2. He comes ev'n at prefent,
Reads Mankind this leffon,
That from Sin converted,
They to Him true-hearted,
Should no more in folly,
But in Truth walk wholly.
3. They who of this Master
Not afham'd, now faster
To him to be joined,
Are thro' Faith inclined,
Find their former finning
Cleans'd at the beginning.
4. He hides with his Mantle;
Then by facramental
Rites in him to build them,
He for Food does yield them
His own Self, O wonder!
Love's invention tender!
5. Those who at no distance
Stay, but get Confiftence
In him, and in Walking
Their fole Object make him ;
Such at their Departure,
Fly to him with rapture.
6. For, not long deferred,
Comes their end defired,
When from all vexation
He'll grant Relaxation,
And their Soul will folace
In that upper Palace.

7. From whence he moreover
Will come, on clouds hover,
And from Caves of flumber
Summon the whole number
Of the dead, t'adore him,
Bow as King before him.

8. Now we beg, Lord Jefus,
Inly fo difpofe us,
That each may be ever
Found a true Believer,
His Course here fo finish,
To Life endless vanish.

And fent his well beloved Son

3. That he might flay each enemy,
Sin, world and Satan: and that he
Bind himself ever to thee.

4. Whereby thou, cleans'd and bleft indeed,

And from the evil Conscience freed, Mightest in his work proceed.

5. So hearken, O Jerufalem,
Thy God, sweeter than th' honey-

Vifiting to thee does come.
6. Thy fpirit he will right renew,

Nor repent that he did fo.

7. He will be thine intirely,

And thou his faithful Bride fhalt be Quite without hypocrify.

8. He'll tell thee of great Myfteries, He will let thee behold his Face, And quite friendly thee embrace. 9.
