HYMNS of the BRETHREN

IN THE

Eighteenth Century.

[Introitus.]

I.

OD we praife, that in thefe

GOD Go days,

And e'er fince the Lamb was flain, Righteousness comes by free Grace, And all health from one dear Man! So that to have known his Wounds,

Like all names of Virtues founds:
If of other Law we're told,
All our answer is, "That's old."
2. Yet believe! with Him to live
And confer, works Virtues too;
On our Face, Unfaithfulness,

In leaft things, itself would fhew:
We should weep, perhaps turn pale;
Not because his Mercies fail,
Or his Crofs can't fatisfy!
But one hurts a tender Tye.

3.

The Ground this of Love's Law is; We remember how we felt, When the Lamb by his Blood's flame Did at firft our bosoms melt, And free Mercy's Ways did shine So majestic and divine: Then, tho' flavish fear did fleep, Sprung heart's motions ftrong & deep, 4. For we faw, with Joy and Awe,

What a Bridegroom we embrac'd, With what HIM thro' endless Time Our amazing lot was caft. Here enfu'd no Talk or Shew; But a Wish to be found true, And a Tafte and Will, (that's fure). 'Bove all Rules, exact and pure. 5. What whole Plan our Lord does

8. Rather well, we could the Zeal

Which we feel, refrain to name; 'Tis fo poor! and were it more,

All our Glorying is the Lamb: Only this we would imprefs, "That the gofpel's more than phrafe;" 'Tis what's wont to burft death's yoke, And to quicken Souls, when fpoke. 9. When his blood, like a strong flood,

Thus each obstacle outweighs ; When we know, from now to now,

What He to our Spirit fays; When we dare, fince he did bleed, On his choiceft Path proceed: Then our Light is true, and we Hold aright Chrift's Myllery.

TH

HE faithful Father Abraham, With all who bore the Patriarch's name,

The Priests and Levites in their state,
The watchmen at the Temple gate;
2. The Fathers ftrong in Faith and
bold,

With those who prophefy'd of old,
The antient tribe of Witneffes,
And Ifrael's fan&tified Race;

3. They had nor knew no other God,
But him who thro' his death and blood,
As his dear Father's Pleasure was,
Did Penance for the Sinner's cause:
4. The Lamb, the Church's Lord and
Head,

With whom we're fo enamoured,
Him Abra'm and his feed ador'd
As their own God and only Lord.
5. Who left his Father's majefty,
And put on our Humanity,

He in the Covenant of old
Was as the Chrift of God foretold;
6. On this Account it is we read,
That Abra'm on his Day was glad ;
And joy'd to view him as his Lamb,
Bearing his fins, and guilt, and shame.
Therefore they wish'd with thou-

10. That the Lamb brought them | 20. Now, God in human flesh re

thro' with pow'r,

And open'd wide their prifon-door, And touch'd them with his bleeding love,

And led them to the Realms above. 11. Therefore it ftands moft fure and plain,

Why the poor helplefs Sinner-train Now thro' the World difperit abroad Hold Jefus as their Lord and God. 12. We with the Lamb are fatisfied; Who knows or feels ought more befide,

Belongs not to our finner choir; The Lamb's the whole of our defire. 13. In Him we ever have our fill, And would we foar yet higher still To fearch the Godhead's myfteries, There we can never reft at ease.

14. From such a search we turn again,
And childlike afterwards remain,
Viewing the Nail-prints of the Lamb,
From whence our free election came.

15.
Would we howe'er the Father fee?
This only thro' the Son can be;
Philip, he faw him in the Son,
The Partner of his royal throne
16. Thank God! that I his finner am;
Put all my Selfishness to shame!
While I'm of Jefu's Blood poffeft,
That's it, whereon my heart shall rest.
17. Join with me in this bleffed mind,
Brethren, and cast all else behind;
As Duft before the Saviour keep,
And rightly learn the Sinnership.
18. Then fimply ftep by step proceed,
Where Jefu's hand your plan has laid,
And witness of our loving Lamb
Thro' heat and cold, reproach and

19. Then, when his bleffed Will is fo, To call one from this World below; He flies to Jefu's wounded Brealt, Where thofe departed finners reft.

JE Chief,

Sweet Object of our Hearts belief,
O let us in thy Nail-prints fee
Our Pardon and Election free;
And in the op'ning of thy pierced fide,
Freely go in and out, and feed, and
hide!

2. This thing a Wonder may be stil'd; First it seems eafy for a child; Which yet a Hero can't atchieve,

And dies before he can believe: 'Tis the top-art of thofe around the Throne,

'Tis that whereby the little Flock is known.

3. While human Nature fhall remain, While Jefus Lord and Christ fhall reign;

So long this Topic fhall be prefs'd,
As the whole Gofpel's first and laft:
