WALL-POCKETS.

HE wall-pocket shown below is made of white velveteen. The figures are cut from paper, and affixed with small pins. There are two sets of these: those leaving the surface pure white, and which constitute the flowers, stars, and figures, which fill in the scroll-work point. The scroll is cut separately. These are placed in position, and the surface "spattered"; the scroll-work papers are re

moved; the work again spattered slightly, then the flowers, etc., are removed; the black parts are then made with indelible ink and India ink rubbed together. A pocket is made and lined on the upper part of the back, with black velveteen, which contrasts with the white edge, and shows the beauty of the work more distinctly. This same pattern looks beautiful white drilling-muslin, spattered with indelible ink, and is very useful in a bedroom, to hang beside the bed or washstand.

Cut a piece of card-board ten inches high and eight inches wide to constitute the back;

the pocket should be eight inches high; cut off the corners, and slope both back and pocket in a graceful curve, as in the illustration.

Cut scarlet or some other bright shade of merino, to fit both back and pocket, and line with coloured muslin.

Embroider a bouquet or other design upon each; bind both securely together, and finish with silk cords and ribbon bows. Place a fancy button upon the top of pocket and back, with loops of cord, and suspend by ribbons.

This pocket may be covered with velvet, and embroidered with beads or gold or silver thread.

AN

PENWIPER (Satin Stitch).

N oblong strip of cardboard lined with black silk is covered with a piece of pale blue cloth, scalloped, vandyked, and embroidered with coral purse silk in satin and button-hole stitch. On this are placed

box-pleatings of black cloth vandyked to correspond, under a pleating of blue cloth embroidered with coral. Butterflies of brown gold leather on the

blue pleats.

THE

ORNAMENTAL PENWIPER (Appliqué).

HE inner leaves of the penwiper are cut out of black felt, and the outer ones of black cloth, vandyked and scalloped according to our illustration. The upper leaf has an appliqué of pale yellow perforated cardboard, sewn on with gold thread in Smyrna stitch. Round the edge of the cardboard are two strips, each three holes wide, of fawn-colour and yellow cardboard twisted together and sewn on with silk in the same stitch, using

TH

PINCUSHION (In the Shape of a Miniature Hairbrush).

HE handle and frame are made of alfenide, and fitted with a hole to suspend the brush. The front of the brush is fitted with a cushion of violet velvet, into which the pins are stuck. The back is covered with black satin which has been previously embroidered with coloured silks. The flowers are worked in chain stitch with shaded violet silk and yellow silk in knotted silk for the stamina. The leaves and foliage are worked with different shades of olive.
