THIRTIETH CONGRESS-SECOND SESSION. wwww HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. COMMERCE AND NAVIGATION. LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY, TRANSMITTING A report from the Register of the Treasury of the commerce and navigation of the United States for the last fiscal year. JANUARY 22, 1849. Laid upon the table, and ordered to be printed; and, on motion of Mr. Nicoll, 10,000 copies extra ordered to be printed. TREASURY DEPARTMENT, SIR: I have the honor to transmit a report from the Register of the Treasury, containing the statements of the commerce and navigation of the United States for the last fiscal year, prepared as required by the act of the 10th February, 1820. I have the honor to be, sir, your obedient servant, Hon. R. C. WINTHROP, R. J. WALKER, Speaker of the House of Representatives TREASURY DEPARTMENT, Register's Office, January 20, 1849. SIR: I herewith transmit the commercial and tonnage statements for the year ending June 30, 1848, compiled in this office from the quarterly returns made to it by the several custom-houses, under the act of the 10th February, 1820. Permit me to remark, that the delay in rendering these statements was occasioned by the many calls from Congress during thể last long session for information relative to the imports and exports of sundry articles which had to be culled from the collectors abstracts before they were recorded, and from the fact that the principal clerk on that branch of business was confined to his bed for several months. I have the honor to be, sir, your obedient servant, To Hon. R. J. WALKER, Secretary of the Treasury. |
