* It should have seeined most probable that after the magicians owned that it was the finger of God, he would have repented; but as he had said, “ Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice?" chap. v. ver. 2, by which he seemed to deny the existence and unity of God; therefore, when the magicians told bim it was the finger of God, he was angry with them, and hardened his heart, as not willing to give ear thereto : and this seems clear, as he did not send after them any more.

Or a mixture of noisome beasts. • As it is mentioned in the preceding verse that God would sever the land of Egypt, it seems rather superfluous here. To this I answer, that in the preceding verse the distinction of the land of Goshen is mentioned, that there should be no mixture of beasts there : and by this is meant, that if even any of the Israelites should chance to be in any other part of Egypt they should not be injured by them. ·

# Or, Destroyed. q As you did in regard of the frogs, when you promised to let them go, but did not. And it seems that Moses was apprehensive of bis deceiving him, which he really did, as may be observed in verse 32, and which fully verified Moses's suspicion.

• The four first verses in this chapter, according to the English Bible, belang to chap. vü. in the Hebrew copy, marked verses, 26, 27, 28, 29, and this chapter should have begun with verse five; but to prevent the transposition of verses, I have begun this chapter conformable to the English Bible, and which is, the twenty-sixth verse in the Hebrew copy.

It may be wondered why Moses made use of the expression, when? For, undoubtedly, Pharaoh would wish to be rid of the plague as soon as possible, especially as it was a grievous one. To this it máy be answered, that Moses did not make use of the word when with regard to the removal of the frogs, but to the departure of the people--when will you let them go; and I will pray for thee, and thy servants, &c. : to which he answered, to-morrow.
