Heb. Gathering of their waters. Here we find that all the waters of Egypt were turned to blood ; but in verse 17, where the message is delivered, the waters of the river only are mentioned : to which it may be answered, that as Pharaoh denied the power of God, and boasted, “ My river is my own, and I have made it for myself.” (Ezek. chap. xxix, ver. 3.) God therefore in his message mentioned the river only, and subjoined, In this thou shalt know that I am the Lord that I have inade the river, and not thee; but the plague was, that all the waters should be struck, and turned into blood.

|| It is worthy of observation, that although the magicians could do something which might increase the plague, by imitating it, yet they could do nothing to remove it with all their art.

come a serpent." In this place Aaron is mentioned before Moses, but in the succeeding Moses is mentioned first-the reason of which is, that in the genealogy Aaron precedes Moses as the elder; but in the message Moses is first noticed, as the principal, being the person to whom God spake face to face.

From this verse to chap. vii. ver. 7, inclusive, I understand is only a short rehearsal of what had happened before, as an information to future ages.

I must observe here, that it was not the wonders tbat established Moses's mission to have come from the Lord-for, the magicians did the same; but it was the foretelling of these surprising wonders that was to convince them that Moses was inspired, which the magicians did not do; for, they never foretold what they were going to do.

This is a beautiful metaphor, and by which it is meant, that, as God by means of his prophets, makes known his will to mankind, 60 was Aaron to do for Moses, by interpreting what he had to say to Pharaoh, & Heb. “ And I will lay my hand.” The word hand in Hebrew is frequently used for power.

** For as Pharaoh had said to Moses, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice ?" By which he seemed to insinuate that he knew no such self-existent Being; the Lord therefore said, that when he stretched forth his hand over Egypt he should then be sensible of his power, and know that he was the Lord.

people, in hastening to send me before the time that you chose to redeem them; for Moses judged that the time of their redemption was not yet come. To this, God answered, " Now thou shalt see what I will do to Pharaoh ; "I shall not long delay bringing the plagues on him, as you judged, for the time is near, that with a strong hand he shall let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.

* Moses, receiving a command without being joined to Aaron, starteth here the former objection of an impediment in his speech, calling it here being of uncircumcised lips, which favours my explanation on chap. iv. ver. 10.

The meaning of which is, that they should acquaint the children of Israel with their message to Pharaoh ; and which was, “ To bring the children of Israel out of Egypt."

* This is introduced here only to give the genealogy of Aaron and Moses; but, out of respecte Reuben and Simeon being older than Levi, (who was Moses and Aaron's fore-father,) Scripture would not omit mentioning them.
