there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed 8 quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his dis- 9 ciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus 10

unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day, according to the scriptures; and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve. 1 Co. xv. 3, 4, 5. Lo, I have told you.] See chap. xxiv. 25. Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations. They have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save. Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together. Who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else besides me; a just God and a Saviour, there is none besides me. Is. xlv. 20, 21. And now I have told you before it came to pass, that when it is come to pass ye might believe. John xiv. 29. These things have I told you, that when the time shall come ye may remember that I told you of them: and these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. John xvi. 4. 8 With fear and great joy.] But many of the priests and Levites, and chief of the fathers who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice, and many shouted aloud for joy: so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off. Ezr. iii. 12, 13. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Ps. ii. 11. And they (the women) went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed; neither said they any thing to any man, for they were afraid. Mar. xvi. 8. And as they (the disciples) thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet; and while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? Lu. xxiv. 36-41. Verily, verily I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice;

and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. John xvi. 20. 22. And when "he" ("Jesus") had "so said " ("Peace be unto you"), he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this he breathed on them, and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. John xx. 20, 21, 22.

9 As they went to tell his disciples.] Thou meetest him that rejoiceth, and worketh righteousness; those that remember thee in thy ways. Is. lxiv. 5. Now when Jesus was risen, early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. Mar. xvi. 9, 10. They have taken away my Lord (said Mary Magdalene to the angels); and when she (Mary Magdalene) had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Mary! She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni! which is to say, Master. John xx. 14. 16.

All hail.] And the angel came in unto "her" ("Mary"), and said, Hail! thou that art highly favoured; the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women. Lu. i. 28. Then the same day (when Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord), at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, came Jesus, and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you! John xx. 19. Finally, brethren, farewell: be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 2 Cor. xiii. 11. See verse 17. And held him by the feet.] The watchmen that go about the city found "me" ("the Church of Christ"), to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth? It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him (Christ) whom my soul loveth. I held him, and would not let him go, &c. 3, 4. And (behold a woman in the city, which was a sinner) stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her

unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into
11 Galilee, and there shall they see me. Now when they were
going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed
12 unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when
they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they

head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them
with the ointment. Lu. vii. 38. Then took
Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very
costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and
wiped his feet with her hair; and the house
was filled with the odour of the ointment.
John xii. 3. Touch me not (said Jesus to
Mary Magdalene), for I am not yet ascended
to my Father: but go to my brethren, and
say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and
your Father, and to my God and your God.
John xx. 17. Behold (said he that hath the
seven spirits of God and the seven stars), I will
make them of the synagogue of Satan, which
say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie;
I will make them to come and worship before
thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.
Re. iii. 9.

Worshipped him.] See verse 17. chap. ii. 2;
xiv. 33.

And I beheld, and I heard the voice
of many angels round about the throne and
the beasts and the elders; and the number of
them was ten thousand times ten thousand,
and thousands of thousands, saying with a
loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was
slain to receive power, and riches, and wis-
dom, and strength, and honour, and glory,
and blessing. And every creature which is
in heaven, and on the earth, and under the
earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that
are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and
honour, and glory, and power, be unto him
that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the
Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts
said, Amen! And the four and twenty elders
fell down and worshipped him that liveth for
ever and ever. Re. v. 11-14.

10 Be not afraid.] See verse 7. But
straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying,
Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid (for
they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit, when
they saw Jesus walking on the sea). Mat.
xiv. 27. And as they (the disciples) thus
spake (saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and
hath appeared to Simon), Jesus himself stood
in the midst of them, and saith unto them,
Peace be unto you! But they were terrified
and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen
a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye
troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your
hearts ? Lu. xxiv. 36, 37, 38. It is I (said
Jesus, as he walked upon the sea); be not afraid.
John vi. 20.

Go tell my brethren.] See verse 7. Go
your way, tell his disciples and Peter (said
the angel) that he goeth before you into
Galilee. Mar. xvi. 7. And they put away
the strange gods from among them, and served

the Lord. And his soul was grieved for the
misery of Israel. Ju. x. 16. The Lord is
merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and
plenteous in mercy: he will not always chide,
neither will he keep his anger for ever. He
hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor
rewarded us according to our iniquities. For
as the heaven is high above the earth, so
great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
As far as the east is from the west, so far
hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the
Lord pitieth them that fear him. Ps. ciii.
8-13. These signs shall follow them that
believe: in my name shall they cast out devils,
they shall speak with new tongues. Mar.
xvi. 17.

My brethren.] See chap. xii. 50. Who is
my mother? and who are my brethren ?
And he stretched forth his hand toward his
disciples, and said, Behold my mother and
my brethren! Mat. xii. 48, 49. Who is my
mother and my brethren? And he looked
round about on them which sat about him,
and said, Behold my mother and my brethren.
For whosoever shall do the will of God, the
same is my brother, and my sister, and mo-
ther. Mar. iii. 33, 34, 35. Touch me not
(said Jesus to Mary Magdalene), for I am not
yet ascended to my Father: but go to my
brethren, and say unto them, I ascend to my
Father and your Father, to my God and your
God. John xx. 17. In that he himself
(Christ) hath suffered, being tempted, he is
able to succour them that are tempted. He.
ii. 18.

11 Some of the watch, &c.] See verse 4.
Pilate said unto "them" ("the chief priests
and Pharisees"), Ye have a watch; go your
way, make it as sure as ye can. So they
went and made the sepulchre sure, sealing
the stone, and setting a watch. Mat. xxvii.
65, 66.

12 When they were assembled.] See chap.
xxvi. 3, 4. When the morning was come, all
the chief priests and elders of the people took
counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
And when they had bound him (Jesus), they
led him away, and delivered him to Pontius
Pilate the governor. Then Judas which had
betrayed him, when he saw that he was con-
demned, repented himself, and brought again
the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests
and elders. Now the next day that followed,
the day of preparation, the chief priests and
Pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying,
Sir, we remember that that deceiver said
while he was yet alive, After three days I will

gave large money unto the soldiers, Saying, Say ye, His disciples 13 came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this 14 come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this 15 saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a moun- 16

rise again: command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead; so the last error shall be worse than the first. Mat. xxvii. 1, 2, 3. 62, 63, 64. Let us break their bands asunder (said the kings of the earth), and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Ps. ii. 1-7. The chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away and believed on Jesus. John xii. 10, 11. It came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and Scribes, and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. And when they had set "them " ("Peter and John") in the midst, they asked, By what power or by what name have ye done "this" teaching the people, and healing the impotent man")? Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John (who declared that they healed the impotent man in the name of Jesus of Nazareth), and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled, and they took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus. But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered, and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye; for we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified God for that which was done. VOL. II.

For the man (the impotent man) was above forty years old on whom this miracle of healing was shewed. Ac. iv. 5, 6, 7. 13-22. When "they" ("the Jews") heard "that" ("that Peter said, We are his witnesses of these things; so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey"), they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them. Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space. And to him they agreed (when he said, Refrain from these men, &c.). And when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. Ac. v. 33, 34. 40.

13 And stole him away, &c.] Jesus saith unto him (to the high priest, who said, " Tell us whether thou be the Christ the Son of God"), Thou hast "said:" nevertheless, I say unto you, hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mat. xxvi. 64.

14 We will persuade him, &c.] And when Herod had sought for "him" ("Peter"), and found him not, he examined the keepers (of the prison), and commanded that they should be put to death. Ac. xii. 19.

15 They took the money.] What will ye give me (said Judas to the rulers), and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. Mat. xxvi. 15. The love of money is the root of all evil; which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Ti. vi. 10.

Until this day. That field (the potter's field) was called the field of blood unto this day. Mat. xxvii. 8.

16 The eleven disciples.] Afterward (after Jesus had appeared to the two disciples on their way to Emmaus) he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief, and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. Mar. xvi. 14. Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? John vi. 70. And when they were come in "they" ("the disciples") went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alpheus, and 00

17 tain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, 18 they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven

Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of the names together were about an hundred and twenty,) Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus; for he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem, insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama; that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take. Wherefore of these men which have accompanied with us, all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection. And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen; that he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they gave forth their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven. Ac. i. 13-26. If Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain; yea, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ, whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 1 Co. xv. 15.

Went away into Galilee.] See verses 7. 10. After I am risen again (said Jesus to his disciples), I will go before you into Galilee. Mat. xxvi. 32.

17 When they saw him.] Verily I say unto you (said Jesus), There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Mat. xvi. 28.

Worshipped him.] See verse 9. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little: blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Ps. ii. 12. So shall the King greatly desire “ thy” (“ the Church's”) beauty: for he

is thy Lord, and worship thou him. Ps. xlv. 11. All men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. John v. 23.

But some doubted.] After "that" (“that Christ was seen of Cephas") he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain unto this present; but some are fallen asleep. 1 Co. xv. 6.

18 All power is given unto me, &c.] See chap. xi. 27. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Mat. xvi. 28. Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree; the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Ps. ii. 6-9. Thou spakest in vision to thy Holy One, and saidst, have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. Ps. lxxxix. 19. Also I will make him my first-born, higher than the kings of the earth. Ps. lxxxix. 27. The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power: in the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning thou hast the dew of thy youth. Ps. cx. 1, 2, 3.

Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Is. ix. 6, 7. And there was given "him” (“the Son of man") dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away; and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. Da. vii. 14. “He” (“ Jesus,” said the angel to Mary) shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David; and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. La. ii. 32, 33.

All things are delivered to me of my Father (said Jesus); and no man knoweth who the Son is but the Father; and who the Father is but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. Lu. x. 22. Glorify thy Son (said Jesus to his Father), that thy Son also may glorify thee. John xvii. 1. Let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified both Lord and Christ. Ac. ii. 36. To this end Christ both died and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. Ro. xiv. 9. He (Christ) hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, All things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted which did put all things under him. 1 Co. xv. 27. For by him were all things created that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers; all things were created by him, and for him; and he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the Church: who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; that in all things he might have the pre-eminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell. Col. i. 16-19. God hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. He. i. 2. And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come, because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. Re. xi. 15, 16, 17. He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. Re. xvii. 14. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of kings, and Lord of lords. Re. xix. 16.

19 Ye therefore.] All the ends of the world shall remember, and turn unto the Lord; and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee; for the kingdom is the Lord's, and he is the governor among the nations. Ps. xxii. 27, 28. The Lord hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen he hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Ps. xcviii. 2, 3. Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth: I have put my spirit upon him; he shall bring forth judgment to

the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall be not quench; he shall bring forth judgment unto truth: he shall not fail nor be discouraged till he have set judgment in the earth, and the isles shall wait for his law. Is. xlii. 1-4. And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Is. xlix. 6. The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Is. lii. 10. For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come that I will gather all nations and tongues, and they shall come and see my glory; and I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles. Is. lxvi. 18, 19. Go ye into all the world (said Jesus to his disciples), and preach the Gospel to every creature. that believeth and is baptized shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mur. xvi. 15, 16. Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47, 48. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Ac. i. 8. Then (when the whole city came together to hear the word of God) Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to " you" ("the Jews") but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles; for so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. Ac. xiii. 46, 47. Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles (said Paul to the Jews at Rome), and that they will hear it. Ac. xxviii. 28. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God; but I say, Have they not heard? Yes, verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Ro. x. 17, 18. And you that were some time alienated, and
