the insensible I worship, (attend en riant, if you choose,) is not to be won. I commenced the siege in a spirit of deep revenge! not with the superficial vanity of a Vahl, imagining that which he wished was already gained, or with the dull methodism of a saintly Montague, or the sensitive modesty of a yielding, jealous Lorevaine. No! I called forth her attention, I excited her feelings, brought her by degrees to look to me for intelligence of her heart-stricken friend; then I dashed into controversial argument right or wrong, not fearing her dislike so much as her relapsing into apathetic languor. As a stimulus, I made her my confidant, and spoke of Felissa, and she believes me pining to return to cultivate the vine and the olive-branch in Andalusia; to chew white bread, and train white laurel, pur préférence to the dandies which enchain me here; she pities me and Felissa much more, and is even planning in what manner she can assist our union!

"You shall learn the denouement-patience! Darmaya fancies that I am satisfied with his generosity in having lent me, with good secu

rity, ten thousand pounds, and that for that I am to work and be doorkeeper to his boudoir, clearing it from innovation- Quelle innocence! He would not give me his grandchild. He intends to make her the representative of his illustrious race; and though from detestation of Lorevaine he will never permit her to marry him, I shrewdly guess he has vast schemes for Ellen's aggrandisement—therefore I am silent as to my future speculation. But submit he shall!

"But hark ye! We must mind that Issachar does not escape our hold. Be trebly circumspect, my uncle dear. Let no other key be forged; for that old, resolute Morgan, has positively advertised for this boy by name, offering a large reward. Darmaya trembles, so do I, for if he were at large, I should not join the link of the chain round Darmaya easily again, and his exposure would not flatter me. He tells me, as he declares, every thing,' but I make him out by hearing the other half from Lady Belnovine, and it affords matter for conversation with her, though all that she is instructed in is of minor import. but she cannot forbear unburthening her mind any more than I can avoid and steer from loving this Miss De Lastre. Her pensive eyes and upraised lids remind me of Guido's inimitable pictures; and her hands pressed over her bosom with contemplative gracefulness, almost justify me in worshipping a woman! Do not brand me with the name of fool, or impugn an acknowledged hero in strength of nerve and system! She will fall in the end, or die! and I

sure you, Miss Bettina," said Murphy, as he put his flute in its case. "We suit exactly, and always did. I recollect that our intimacy began at some theatre in Paris, where he was disappointed of a lift he expected, and I offered him my vehicle, and he asked me to dinner the very next day; that is, we agreed to dine together."

"He is very handsome and clever certainly," Betsy rejoined; "but don't you think he gives himself great airs, and orders you about as if you were his dog?"

"Not in the least; it's his manner to every one. He tells me all his secrets; and I took a letter for him to Lord Darmaya, and was to have been his second, had they fought. I believe the old man wanted him to marry Miss De Lastre; but I suppose he chooses to take his own time, and have his swing in liberty somewhat longer. But I was glad when they made it up, for I should not have enjoyed that concern by any means. Lord Belnovine stepped in, and turned it off with some joke, and I never laughed more happily in my life; for if Vahl had been killed, I should have been in a pretty pickle."

"I always said that Miss De Lastre was not so much the fashion as you pretended to declare her, Murphy. Now you must be convinced; for in the first place here's the Duke run away, and then Lord Vahl won't be nailed down."
