DEAR SIRS,
I have, as requested, to-day visited the Royal
Laundry, with reference to the Advertisement of the Not-
tingham firm, who state that their Starch has been used for
many years in the Royal Laundry, and have been assured by
Mr. Thompson, the Superintendent, that none but yourselves
have any right to state that they supply Starch to her Ma-
jesty's Laundry, as no other Starch is there used, nor has
ocen used for some years, but the Glenfield Patent Starch.

I have been further assured that your Starch continues
to give complete satisfaction, and that though trial has been
made of samples of various Starches, none of these have been
found nearly equal in quality to the Glenfield.
I am, Dear Sirs,

Your obedient Servant,

WM. BLACK.

SHORTHAND-PITMAN'S PHONOGRAPHIC

TEACHER: a Guide to a Practical acquaintance with the Art of Shorthand. 6d.; by post, 7d. The Lessons of Students are corrected gratuitously through the post, by the members of the Phonetic Society.

London: FRED. PITMAN, 20, Paternoster-row, E.C.

Certain dishonest and unprincipled Chemists piratically apply this name to worthless compounds-a name invented and applied by Dr. J. C. BROWNE, M.R.C.S. (Ex-Army Medical Staff), to his great discovery, which is so extraordinarily curative in CoNSUMPTION, COUGHS, ASTHMA, CROUP, BRONCHITIS, NEURALGIA, HEADACHES, HYSTERIA, DIARRHEA, and DIFTHERIA. To Fami lies, Invalids, and Travellers, it is indispensable, and medical authority pronounces it invaluable.

As a proof of its efficacy, a few extracts from numerous testimonials by physicians and surgeons are given:

From W. VESALIUS PETTIGREW, M.D., Hon. F.R.C.S., England, formerly Lecturer upon Anatomy and Physiology at St. George's School of Medicine:"I have no hesitation in stating, after a fair trial of Chlorodyne, that I have never met with any medicine so efficacious as an anti-spasmodic and sedative. I have used it in Consumption, Asthma, Diarrhea, and other diseases, and am most perfectly satisfied with the results."

From Dr. M'MILLMAN, of New Galloway, Scotland:-"I consider it the most valuable medicine known."

G. B. HAYWARD, Esq., Surgeon, Stow-on-ye-Wold: "I am now giving the Chlorodyne in twenty-drop doses with marvellous good success in allaying inveterate sickness in advanced pregnancy."

Dr. M'GRIGOR CROFT, late Army Staff, says:-"It is a most invaluable medicine."

Dr. GIBBON, Army Medical Staff, Calcutta:-"Two doses completely cured me of Diarrhoea,"

From C. V. RIDOUT, Esq., Surgeon, Egham:-"As an astringent in severe Diarrhoea, and an anti-spasmodic in Colic with Cramps in the Abdomen, the reliefis instantaneous. As a sedative in Neuralgia and Tie Douloureux its effects were very remarkable. In Uterine Affections I have found it extremely valu. able; and I could, if necessary, add many more striking instances of the powerful influence Chlorodyne exerts in controlling disease."

Sold only in bottles, at 28. d. and 4s. 6d., by the Sole Agent and Manufacturer, J. T. Davenport, 33, Great Russell-street, Bloomsbury-square, London: or sent, carriage free on receipt of stamps or Post-office Order, and with Professional Testimonials enclosed. None Genuine without the words "Dr. J. Collis Browne's Chlorodyne" engraved on the Government stamp.

NOTICE. GUSTAVE AIMARD was the adopted son of one of the most powerful Indian tribes, with whom he lived for more than fifteen years, in the heart of the prairies, sharing their dangers and their combats, and accompanying them everywhere, rifle in one hand and tomahawk in the other. In turn squatter, hunter, trapper, warrior, and miner, Gustave Aimard has traversed America from the highest peaks of the Cordilleras to the ocean shores, living from hand to mouth, happy for the day, careless of the morrow. Hence it is that Gustave Aimard only describes his own life. The Indians of whom he speaks he has known,-the manners he depicts were his own.

PROSPECTUS.

[graphic]

I have been induced to undertake the conduct of a new Magazine, designed to promote the Interests of Home, the Refinements of Life, and the Amusement and Information of all Classes.

The many eminent and popular authors with whom I have the honour to be associated, and upon whose cordial and zealous aid I am permitted to calculate, will give to the publication a Character and a Value for Originality and Vigour such as to establish it in public favour. Its fate must depend entirely on its merits; there can be no other ground on which to sustain anticipations of success. Every reader is now a critic and a judge; and that which is either mediocre or indifferent will be inevitably rejected. With this conviction the enterprise is undertaken: the Proprietors will do their duty; I will endeavour to do mine.

In this Magazine, neither Religious nor Political discussion will have any place; although, I trust, there will be a full consciousness of the power that is delegated to every author to advance, with due humility, the true interests of both: bearing in mind that every printed word becomes a planted seed that must spring up-a weed or flower; and that pure Religion and Political Progress may be advocated indirectly, where to do so directly would be apart from an appointed office and an allotted purpose. Due attention will be paid to the lessons that are continually taught by Science for the promotion of Health Order, and Social good; Taste will be regarded as the handmaid of Virtue whose efforts may be equally beneficial in the parlour and the boudoir, either where means are restricted or resources unlimited; and while we seek to interest by agreeable and instructive Fiction, adequate regard will be had to the importance of newly-discovered or newly-developed Facts; and, above all, generous sympathies will be excited to advance the loftier aims and holier objects of Humanity.

The Magazine will be "illustrated" with Steel Etchings from the facile and popular pencil of Hablot K. Browne; while engravings on wood will be given with such articles as may be rendered more intelligible by their aid.

The title of the Magazine-"Sr. JAMES's"-is associated with many famous memories of the past. The name "ST. JAMES's" is linked inseparably with the heroic men and women who have made the age renowned. "ST. JAMES's" is "the Court" of our most estimable and beloved Sovereign; and of a family rendered even more illustrious by domestic virtues than by "birth and state," From "ST. JAMES's" a pure and beneficent influence extends to every part of the dominions of the Crown-an influence that becomes an example to all rani and conditions of society-from the very highest to the very humblest.

THE ST. JAMES'S MAGAZINE is, therefore, a competitor for that public support which is ever accorded to desert: the extent of its interests and the amount of its value will soon be ascertained ;-to those who receive it "on trust," I can but convey the assurance that my utmost efforts shall be put forth to obtain such valuable assistance from writers of the highest eminence in every department of Literature, Art, and Practical Science, as will secure the roPULARITY and PROSPERITY that are hoped for and anticipated. LITERARY INTELLIGENCE.

Ir is stated that a new novel by the authoress of "Adam Bede" is completed, and will be published at Easter. Mr. ANTHONY TROLLOPE'S new story, "Orley Farm," is to be published in twenty monthly shilling parts, the first of which is issued to-day. Each part is to contain two illustrations by Mr. MILLAIS.

The new ladies' shilling magazine, to a rumour respect ing which we referred last month, is to be commenced on the first of April, under the title of the St. James's Magazine. It is to be edited by Mrs. S. C. HALL, and published by SAUNDERS, OTLEY, and Co.

Several other new periodicals are announced to be commenced immediately. One is a half-crown quarterly, to be called the Museum, to be devoted to "education, literature, and science," and to number Mr. EDWIN CHADWICK, the Rev. J. CURRIE, Mr. W. SCOTT DAGLEISH, the Rev. E. W. FARRAR, Mr. JAMES HANNAY, Mr. J. D. MORREL, and Dr. SCHMITZ, among its contributors. Another is to be called the Christian Advocate and Review, and is to be similar in size to the Athenæum, to sell for sixpence, to be published monthly, and to be edited by clergymen of the Church of England, A third, the Compass, will be a threepenny weekly religious newspaper, and both it and the Christian Advocate will be mainly devoted to the defence of the principles of evangelical religion, especially against that class of opponents to which the authors of the Essays and Reviews belong. The Essays and Reviews are now in their fifth edition The whole of the fourth edition was sold in the course of three or four days. The first three editions were published by Messrs. J. W. PARKER and SON (now PARKER, SON, and BOURN), but this house has declined to be further connected with the work, and the fourth and fifth editions have been issued by the Messrs. LONGMAN.

Two new magazines issued their first number on the fifteenth of the month just past. One, the Owlet Papers, is a shilling miscellany devoted to light literature; the other, the Cosmopolitan Review, sells for sixpence, and announces itself as being established "for the promulgation of the programme of GARIBALDI," the "programme" referred to being that statement of political principles, signed by GARIBALDI, which appeared some time ago in a Sicilian paper, then under the editorship of ALEXANDRE DUMAS.

A new penny daily newspaper, to be called the Daily Review, is announced to be commenced in Edinburgh on the 8th of March. It will advocate the views of a certain section of the Free Church. The name of Dr. CANDIASH is mentioned in connexion with it.

justice, that a set of Punch embraces "a complete history of the period" over which it extends, "illustrating with rare fidelity the various social and political changes" which have occurred during that period. An introduction is to be prefixed to each volume of the re-issue, to serve as a key to the events satirized or otherwise commented on."

The library of the late Baron HUMBOLDT, purchased soon after his death by Mr. HENRY STEPHENS, is now in London, and will shortly pass under the hammer. It consists of about sixteen thousand volumes, forming about twelve thousand distinct works. A great many of the books are presentation copies, with the autographs of their authors. None of them have HUMBOLDT'S OWN autograph, but the fly-leaves of many of them,-HUMBOLDT never wrote upon the margins of books,-are filled with manuscript notes from his pen. about to publish, an autobiography. A "History of England and France under the House of Lancaster," which appeared anonymously, and without attracting much attention, in 1855, now turns out to have been from the pen of his versatile lordship, and is announced to be included in the collected edition of his writings which has now for some time been in progress.

It is stated that Lord BROUGHAM has written, and is

The portion of his "History of England" which the late Lord MACAULAY left in manuscript, but ready for the press, will be published by the Messrs. LONGMAN on the 15th of this month. It is also said that a second volume of Mr. BUCKLE'S "History of Civiliza tion" will appear about the same time.

Amongst the other books which are announced to appear immediately, the most important are a life of the late Mr. BRUNEL, by Sir RICHARD BEAMISH, F.R.S.; a new volume of poems by Mr. GERALD MASSEY, to be entitled " HAVELOCK, and other Poems; " a translation from the Italian of a book entitled "NAPOLEON BONAPARTE the First," and said to be from the pen of NAPOLEON'S brother, LOUIS BONAPARTE, ex-king of Holland; a new edition, almost entirely re-written, of Mr. ROBERT BROWNING's poem, "Sordello ;""The Natural History of Ceylon," by Sir JAMES EMERSON TENNANT;" three lectures "On Translating HOMER," by Mr. MATTHEW ARNOLD, the well-known poet, and Professor of Poetry at Oxford; and "The Spirit of the Hebrew Poetry," by Mr. ISAAC TAYLOR, author of the "Natural History of Enthusiasm.”

The celebrated French dramatist, EUGENE SCRIBE, died the other day. His plays number some hundreds; he produced three or four almost every year, from 1815 to 1860. The fortune he gained by them was immense. Mrs. GORE has also departed this life since our last issue. She was one of the most witty and brilliant women of her time, as well as one of its most prolific novelists. "She wrote," we read in the Times, "from sixty to seventy different works, extending to nearly two hundred volumes

Messrs. SAUNDERS and OTLEY'S Oriental Budget entered upon a new and greatly enlarged series with the January-a little library in itself. Her various publications fol number, its price being at the same time raised from threepence to a shilling. It now gives per number more information in literature and art than any other journal we know. It is said to be under the editorship of the Rev. Mr. BRADLEY, better known as "CUTHBERT BEDE."The London Review, since Dr. MACKAY ceased to conduct it, has been under the editorship of Mr. LAWRENCE OLIPHANT, Lord ELGIN's late secretary, and the gentle man who has just been appointed to the English consulate at Japan.

A re-issue of Punch, in monthly volumes, each volume containing the numbers for half a year, commences today. The publishers advertise the re-issue as "Punch's -History of the last Twenty Years," claiming, with some

lowed each other with inconceivable rapidity; sometimes at the rate of a volume per month. But the most remarkable point of all this fertility is that in the two hundred volumes there is scarcely to be found a single dull page. Her wit for the most part took the form of simile; but her comparisons were so subtle and her allusions so swift that she kept the reader's attention at a very high level of activity. Whether she wrote a poem or a play, a novel or a sketch, the composition was always above mediocrity. And then for the matter-it was interesting while it was new, and it will be interesting again when it is old. Some future MACAULAY will turn to her pages for a perfect picture of life as we find it in the upper crust of society." She died in her sixty-first year.
