THE Goddefs Iris (reprefenting the vivid and various Beauties of the Fair Sex,) addreffes the Genius of the Lady's Magazine (whom Cupid is crowning with laurel) and, pointing to the fkies, exhorts her to remind her amiable Correfpondents of the reward there prepared for Learning employed in the caufe of Religion and Virtue.

THE happy

HE happy effect of the cultivation of Polite Literature on the human mind has been acknowledged by every nation, and in every age; to that we are indebted for all our refinements in life and manners. Ufeful knowledge, and the right exercife of reafon, add a new charm to every enjoyment, and are the best refuge in adverfity; there can be no fituation in life in which they are not most valuable; they inftruct us how to act in all poffible circumstances; they raife us above the crowd, expand the heart, and give a warmer glow to every benevolent and virtuous fentiment,

But as the afcent to the Temple of Science has been found steep and difficult, the male fex, as best adapted to laborious exercifes, both of body and mind, for a long time imagined they poffeffed the exclufive privilege of entering it. In the prefent age, however, many of the fair and more amiable fex have preferred claims to the fame honours, and appropriated to themfelves the noble advantage which refult from a diligent cultivation of the faculties of the mind.

To facilitate their improvement, to animate them in their exertions, and to cherish modeft genius with the foftering smile of encouragement, The LADY'S MAGAZINE was first projected. The plan was approved, and during Four-and-wenty Years we have experienced from our Fair Patroneffes and Correfpondents the fame unvaried favour. The Communications we receive are numerous and elegant; and we beg permiffion to affure our Readers, that neither affiduity nor expence fhail be fpared by us to render this Mifcellany a truly Inftructive and Entertaining Repofitory of the Productions of the Genius and Learning of the Ladies of GREAT BRITAIN.
