tween the keelmen on this river and their employers have been perfectly accommodated, and the workmen have feral days paft peaceably pursued their uter ployment.

Lemburgh. Aug. 2. Intelligence was this cay received by the lord provoft, that fome large fhips had appeared off the North conft, fuppofed to be the French fquadron mentioned in our laft, and had spread a very general alarm.

As no action has taken place between the grand armies, there is little or no news from the British nead quarters, which are fill at Rofendael. Genera ords were illued by the duke of York for removing the camp nearer to Breda, but thefe orders were afterwards countermanded. On the 28th ult, the fladtholder paid a visit to and dined with the duke of York; and in tie evering attended the parade, when u e whole army turned out to recive him.

We still entertain well founded hopes flat the pince de Cobourg will be able to maintain his policion on the other fide of the Mefe; for we underfland that 60 000 f efh troops are on their march to the Low countries from Germany.

F: m Brela, it appears, the Antwerp was eva uated in the night between the 230 and 24th. A fmail party of Eng- ha were left to cove the baggage, who arrived at Oudenboich with the fame early in the morring. Sixteen hundred English have arrived at Bergen Op Zoom, and were expected to be followed by 2005 more. The garrison of Maeftricht had allo been reinforced by 8cco Auturians.

Dozer, Aug. 3. The French frigates, feen lately to the eastward of this place, create fome alarm, and we are divided in our opinions refpecting their courfe to get to the North Sea. It is not likely they should proceed through the Channel without being obferved by fume of our cruizers. The molt probable opinion is, that they went North about. The force fent against them will, no doubt, bring f me of them in, if they get to action. The left packet from Fluthing, in company with one of our cutters, paced within a mile of them, and hoilled iguals, fuppoting they were

English; but they foffered both to proceed, without appearing to notice them.

York, Aug. 4. At Bowes, in this county, on Wednesday afternoon, a little pait two o'clock, there was one of the moft dreadful tempefts of wind, thunder, and rain, ever remembered.— The torrent was fo great as in 15 mi nus to inundate the country for many miles round.

Aug. 5. The enfuing affizes throughout the country promife but little buftnefs to the long robed gentlemen. It is a general obfervation throughout the kingdom that there are fewer names in the calendar than was ever remembered.

Chatham, Auguft 6. Yellerday the Edgar, of 74 guns, was put into commillion at this port by fir Charles Knowles, bart. and is ordered to be fitted with the utmoft difpatch for fea.

The Victorious, of 74 guns, was alfo put into commiffion here on Saturday laft, and the command given to captain John Brown, who commanded the Afia, of 64 guns, lately arrived he e from the Weft Indies. The Afa is alfo refitting for fea.

The Deliance, of 74 guns, is likewife daily expected to be commiffioned here, being under orders to be fitted for fea, with ail poffible expedition.

The greatest exertions are also making in expediting the Stag and Unicorn, two fine new frigates, of 32 guns each, lately launched from this Dock-yard; they are already commiffioned.

This morning about 300 recruits from our upper barracks (all fine young fellows, and moftly Irithmen, marched from hence to Gravefend, where they embarked for foreign fervice.

Their deft nation at prefent, however, is not known.

The British, Hanoverian, and Hefian forces in Holland confiit of 29 battalions, and 3000 cavalry, forming together a corps of 42,000 men, in the highest ftate of difcipline, healthy, and in good fuirits. In this number the Dutch troops are not included.

The apprehenfion for the fate of Holland is not near to great as it was a fhort time fince.

The only hip employed in the whale fishery from Newcaille, this feafos, is

the

the John and Margaret, Janfon, which arrived there on Tuesday, and has brought in a more valuable cargo than ever remembered to have been imported into England from Davis's Straits in one bottom: it confifted of ten whales, none of which were under ten feet bone; they produced 180 tons blubber, and the fins weighed nine tons. The captain reports, that only twelve ships from England attended the fishing ground; four from Holland, and one from Norway.

When the last packet left Helvoetfluys, the place was filled with people waiting for an opportunity of coming to this country. There were fixty or feventy paffengers in the laft packet that came over laft week.

The Aurora frigate, captain Effington, is failed for Sluys, where the French are in great force; and, if found neceffary, will embark the garrifon in the tranfports he took with him.

Salisbury, Aug. 11. The late rains have quite changed the face of the pafture land in this country, which until now were, in many inland pasts, fo perfectly dried up, that many who kept cows were compelled to fodder them with hay and other dry meat. Butter is already falling, and a quantity, fresh made, and perfectly good in all refpe&ts (not in rolls) was fold in our market on Saturday afternoon, at çd. the pound.

Leaves, Aug. 11. Much of the corn in this neighbourhood is already fecurely houfed, and our oldeft huibandmen have no recollection of fo abundant an harveft on any former year.

Aug. 12. The quantity of copper collected at and near the ruins of the late fire at Ratcliffe, towards the relief of the fofferers, from the poorer defcription of people, who have flocked there to fee the dreadful develation which a few hours occafione 1, is wonderful; it was weighed, out of curiosity, the other day, and then amounted to more than a ton and a half.

Notwithstanding the reports of a number of lives having been loft at the above fire, on a minute enquiry, it does not appear that more than one perfon fell a victim to its relenticis fury; a circumftance of fome confola

R. D.'s Effay requires revifion..

The Verfes addreffed to a charming Girl, that lives oppofite the Swan at Stratford, in Effex, are too defective to be admitted; as we would not, however, deprive the young lady of the praifes, which, it is probable, are justly her due, because her admirer is not a poet, we shall infert two of

the itanzas.

A beauteous form a beauteous face

A graceful air and neck

A mind that's fill'd with innocence
Good humour and good fenfe

These you poffefs and many more

Too numerous to mention

Such charms as yours I ne'er before
