The Cock REED-BIRD, which is figured on the tree, is black, except a reddish-yellow fpot on the hinder part of the neck, and the covert-feathers of the wings and the rump, which are white: The bill is lead-coloured, and the legs are brown. The Hen Reed-Bird is figured under the Hawk's feet: it is brown on its upper fide, and whitish tinged with yellow on its under fide: the bill is flesh-coloured, and the legs are brown. The Marsh-Hawk is engraved from a drawing done from the life in Penfilvania, and fent to me, by my obliging friend Mr. William Bartram, a native of that country. The Reed-Birds are the fame that Catesby calls Rice- Birds; which fee figured and defcribed in his Hiftory of Carolina, vol. I. p. 14. Mr. Bartram fays, the Marth-Hawk frequents the marshes in the summer season, and feeds upon ReedBirds, Frogs, Snakes, Lizards, &c. They retire from Penfilvania at the approach of winter. As I do not find this Hawk defcribed by Catesby or any other author, I was unwilling to flip the opportunity of giving its figure. Tho' I have not feen the Bird itself, I have great reafon to think Mr. Bartram very correct in his drawing, and exact in his colouring, having compared many of his drawings with the natural fubjects, and found a very good agreement between them. The Rice-Birds are thrown into the plate by way of decoration: they are copied in miniature from Catesby's book, though in attitudes different from his figures. They are fomewhat bigger than a Lark. le fai gravé le Faucon de Marais d'après un deffein fait fur l'oifeau même en Penfilvanie, et qui m'a été envoyé par mon très obligeant ami M. Guil. Bartram né dans ce pays-là. Les oifeaux, que j'appelle Oifeaux de Fonc, font les mêmes que Catesby nomme Oifeaux de Ris, que fon Traducteur a rendus par Ortolans de la Caroline*. M. Bartram dit que Faucon fréquente les marais en été, qu'il fe nourit d'Oiseaux de fonc, ou d'Ortolans, de Grenouilles, de Serpents, de Lezards, &c. et qu'il fe retire de Pensilvanie aux approches de l'hiver. Comme je ne trouve ce Faucon décrit ni par Catesby, ni par aucun autre autheur, je n'ai pas voulu manquer l'occasion d'en donner la figure. Quoique je n'aie pas vu l'oifeau même, j'ai tout lieu de croire, que M. Bartram est très correct dans fa maniére de deffiner, et très exact dans le coloris, ayant comparé plufieurs de fes deffeins avec les fujets naturels, et les ayant trouvés fort reffemblants. Les Ortolans font introduits dans la planche par voye d'ornement: Je les ai copiés en mignature du livre de Catesby, quoiqu'en des attitudes differentes de celles de fes figures. Ils font un peu plus gros qu'une Allouette. CHAP. LXXXII. The Ring Parrakeet, and the THE Ring Parrakeet is the upper figure on the plate: the Blue-headed Parrakeet is the lower. They are both of the fame shape and make every way, and may poffibly be Male and Female: their fize is that of a Dovehouse or Wild Pigeon. Both these birds have their bills wholly red, the irides of their eyes orange-coloured, and a narrow flesh-coloured fkin at the bafis of their bills, in which their noftrils are placed: they have each of them also a little space of flesh-coloured fkin round their eyes. The legs and feet in both are afh-coloured. The Ring Parrakeet has the top and fides of the head green: a black line proceeds from the lower mandible of the bill, downward a little way, then parts into two lines, which turn backward on the fides of the neck, forming a black ring round the neck, which almoft meets behind. On the hinder part of the neck, above this black ring, the feathers are blue; and under the black line paffes a bar of red feathers. The body, both above and beneath, is green; though fomewhat lighter on the under fide, the back and upper fides of the wings being darker, and of a bluer green. The quills, and covert-feathers next above thein within-fide the wings, are of a moufecolour; the leffer coverts of a light blueishgreen it hath a red fpot on the leffer covert-feathers without-fide the wings. The upper fide of the tail is of a blue-green, the PLA. 292. Le Perroquet à Collier, et le A 4 figure du haut de la planche représente Ils le Perroquet à Collier, et la figure inférieure est le Perroquet à Tête Bleue. Ils font tous deux de la même taille et de la même figure en tout fens, et c'est peut-être le Mâle et la Fémelle: ils font de la groffeur d'un Pigeon Domestique, ou d'un Pigeon Ramier. ont tous deux le bec rouge partout; les iris de leurs yeux font orange; et ils ont chacun à la bafe du bec une étroite peau couleur de chair, où leurs nafeaux font placés: ils ont aufi tous deux autour des yeux un petit espace de peau couleur de chair. Les jambes et les pattes de l'un et de l'autre font couleur de cendre. Le Perroquet à Collier a le haut et les côtés de la tête verts: il lui part de la machoire inférieure du bec une barre noire, qui après être un peu defcenduë vers le bas, fe partage en deux branches, qui fe recourbant en ar rière de chaque coté, forment autour du cou un collier noir, dont les bouts fe joignent prefque par derrière. Sur la partie poflérieure du cou, audeffus de ce collier noir, il y a des plumes bleues; et audeffous du même collier, il y a une barre des plumes rouges. Le corps tant dessous que deffus eft vert, quoiqu'un peu plus clair fur le ventre, le dos et le deffus des ailes étant plus foncés, et d'un vert plus bleu. Les pennes et les premiéres plumes qui les couvrent fous les ailes font gris de fouris; les autres plus petites couvertures y font d'un cert bleuatre clair: il y a une tache rouge fur les plus petites couvertures du defus des ailes. Le deffus de la queue eft d'un vert bleu, le under fide of a dufky-yellow or olive-colour: the middle feathers measured thirteen inches; they gradually shorten toward the fides. The Blue-headed Parrakeet has the head wholly of a fine fky-blue colour: in other refpects it agrees with the above-described, being wholly green. Where that has a red fpot on the wing, this has it yellow: the upper fide of the tail is bluer, and the edges of the greater quills inclining to blue. Thefe birds were both brought alive to London in one of our Eaft-India Company's fhips. The first, Willughby fays, is the Pfittacus of the ancients, and the only one known in Europe from the time of Alexander the Great to the age of Nero. (See his Ornithology, p. 115.) The Blueheaded is the only one I have feen of its kind; and I believe no figure or defcription of it hath been given before. I drew them both from the living birds. There is frequently brought from India another fpecies of the Ring-Parrakeet, which differs hardly any thing from what is here described, except in magnitude, which doth not exceed that of a Black-bird, and in wanting the red fpot on the wing: one of these laft I faw at the houfe of George Shelvocke, Efq; at deffous en eft d'un jaune obfcur, ou couleur d'olive: les plumes du milieu de la queuë étoient de treize pouces de long; elles vont en racourciffant de chaque côté. Il a fur les ailes une tache jaune, où l'autre en a une rouge: le deffus de la queuë eft plus bleu, et les bords des pennes du fouet de l'aile tirent fur le bleu. le Ces oifeaux ont été apportés tous deux en vie à Londres, par un des vaiffeaux de notre Compagnie des Indes. Willughby dit que premier eft le Pfittacus des anciens, et le feul, qui fût connu en Europe, depuis le temps d'Alexandre le Grand jufqu'au fiecle de Neron*. Celui qui a la tête bleue eft le feul de cette forte que j'aie jamais vû; et je ne crois pas qu'on en ait donné avant moi, ni figure ni defcription. Je les ai deffinés tous deux en vie. Il vient fouvent des Indes une autre forte de Perroquet à Collier, qui ne différe prefqu'en rien de celui qu'on vient de décrire, excepté en groffeur, n'étant pas plus gros qu'un Merle, et en ce qu'il n'a point de marque rouge fur les ailes: j'en ai vu un de cette derniére espéce chez M.
