Honourable Name in the front of this Second Part

of my Gleanings of Natural History, without Your
knowledge or confent: It is Your Lordship's great love
of,

of, and encouragement given to Natural History, that has emboldened me to lay this little Effay at Your feet, being well affured of Your Lordship's goodness in protecting all who fincerely endeavour, with ftrict truth, to bring new and undiscovered fubjects in Nature to light.

We have good reason to hope, that His Majefty's late glorious and many Conquefts over His and the Nation's enemies, will lay the foundation of a lasting peace, and add repose to the latter part of His Majefty's reign, and security to future times, wherein Learning, Arts, and Commerce may flourish to their highest degree.

I flatter myself with hopes that (when I am no more) the rifing generation will find a powerful patron to all kinds of useful, polite and curious ftudies, as well as to the fine Arts, fince His Royal Highness the Prince has given such signal proofs of fine tafte and genius for the Sciences: And I am confident your Lordship will take every
