of the usual make, and of a dark brown colour. There was brought with this Bird another of the fame fpecies, differing in differing in nothing from it, except that it was only half its fize, and had the golden fpot on fpot on the forehead less in proportion, not reaching over its eyes: it was perfect in its plumage, fo could not be a young bird or neftling, which its fize could not determine; for in fmall Birds the young, as foon as they can fly, are very near equal in bulk to the old ones.

The Blue Manakin is reprefented by the lower figure of this plate: the bill is whitish, or of a flesh colour: the head, neck, rump, and the whole under fide, are blue: the back, upper fides of the wings, and tail, are black; but the feathers are fringed with blue: it hath also a black spot on the throat, drawn from the bafe of the lower part of the bill: a black line paffes alfo from eye to eye round the base of the upper mandible of the bill: the infides of the wings, and under fide of the tail, are of a dark ash colour: the legs and feet are of a dufky brown colour.

The characteristics of the Manakin are, that it hath the bill not fo long and flender as in the Muscicapa kind, nor fo fhort and blunt as thofe of the Parus, or Tit-moufe; but somewhat between them both, and a very little bent downward: it alfo differs from them in having the outer toe on each foot joined a little at their bottoms to the middle toe, which is better reprefented in the three plates, 241, 260, and 261, than in this; and in having their tails shorter in proportion, than many other small Birds have them.

These birds were brought in fpirits from Surinam, a colony of the Hollanders in South America, and are now, A. D.

La figure inférieure de cette planche repréfente le Manaquin bleu : fon bec eft d'un rouge blanchâtre, ou couleur de chair: il a tout le deffous du corps bleu, demême que la tête, le cou, et le croupion: le dos eft noir, auffi bien que le deffus des ailes et de la queue, mais les plumes en font frangées de bleu: il a auffi une longue marque noire fur la gorge, qui prend depuis la bafe du deffous du bec: il a encore une bande noire, qui paffe d'un oeil à l'autre, tournant autour de la bafe du deffus du bec: le deffous des ailes et le deffous de la queue eft d'un couleur de cendre rembruni : les jambes et les pattes font d'un brun très foncé.

Les marques qui caractérisent le Manaquin confiftent, en ce qu'il n'a pas le bec fi long ni fi menu, que l'espèce Mufcicapa (Moucherolle) ni fi court et fi arrondi par le bout, que le Parus ou Mefange, mais entre les deux, et tant foit peu recourbé: il diffère encore de ces Oifeaux, en ce qu'il a l'ergot extérieur de chaque patte joint à celui du milieu vers le bas, ce qui eft représenté plus diftinctement dans les planches 241, 260, et 261, que dans celle-ci ; et en ce qu'il a la queuë plus courte à proportion, que ne l'ont la plupart des autres petits Qifeaux.

THESE Birds are drawn of their natural bignefs; but the Hoopoe Hen is imperfect, I having only the head, and fo much of the neck as you fee in the lower figure.

The upper Bird represents the Black and Blue Creeper: the bill is pointed, black, pretty long, flender, fharp, and arched both upper and under fide, which is a little fhorter than the upper: the tongue is divided into threads at the end: the crown of the head is of a pale green colour: round the base of the upper part of the bill are black feathers, which pafs in black lines on the fides of the head, in which black spaces the eyes are placed: the fides of the head, hinder part of the neck, lower part of the back, rump, covert-feathers of the tail, a bar across the upper part of the wing, and the whole under fide of the Bird, are of a very fine ultramarine blue colour: it hath a broad black line across the lower part of the neck behind, or the upper part of the back the tail is black, as are the outer

CE ES Oifeaux font deffinés de leur grandeur naturelle; mais le Widdehop eft imparfait; vû que je n'en ai que la tête, et autant du cou, qu'on en voit dans la figure.

L'Oifeau d'enhaut repréfente le Grimpereau noir et bleu le bec eft noir, affez long, menu à proportion, pointu par le bout, et fait en forme d'arc, tant la machoire fupérieure, que l'inférieure qui eft la plus courte: le bout de la langue fe partage en plufieurs filets: le fommet de la tête est d'un vert pále: il y a autour de la bafe du deffus du bec des plumes noires faifant deux bandes, qui s'étendent fur les côtés de la tête; les yeux font placés au milieu de ces bandes noires: les côtés de la tête, le derriére du cou, le bas du dos, le croupion, les couvertures de la queue, deux barres qui traversent le haut des ailes font, demême que tout le deffus de l'Oifeau, d'un beau bleu d'outremer: il y a une large barre noire fur le bas du cou par derrière, ou fur le haut du dos: la queuë eft noire : le deffus des ailes eft de la même couleur, excepté une barre bleue, qui traverse
