Of course, in this sly, shrewd way, we extol our present, latest made, new-cut civilization. And we show our pride in it by going with the times, by accepting the spirit of the times, by doing the things that moderns do, and, if possible, doing them in a newer, bolder, more striking and original way than our neighbors. To be old-fashioned is to be out of style-and being out of style

is not over-anxious about religion. Our modern men and women tell us and we are all more or less influenced by the words of those who have the ear of the time and age-that it is quite oldfashioned to believe what you do not see or cannot understand. Of course, they go on to tell us, our forefathers believed so simply and so unquestioningly merely because they did not have the means of probing into the secrets of nature and the mysteries of religionthey had no psychology that explained anything; they knew nothing about

of decolleté women. Hence, they conclude that it is necessary to build schools and colleges for the enlightenment and emancipation of the masses; laboratories for the mental equipment of the intellectual leaders of the people; palaces, if possible, but homes at all events, for those who hold that the best service to mankind is the spread of culture and a broad humanitarianism.

As a consequence, the modern world does not need to squander money in the building of churches. We do not need to discuss war and politics in the open squares. We need not have an out
