Hail to the New Year! may it prove a year of increased diligence in our work, and of increased blessing upon our work and Christ's work, in spreading the glorious tidings of salvation to the lost and hitherto neglected tribes of South America! In this unpretending periodical our friends expect us to help them to direct their energies afresh to the prosecution of this labour of faith and labour of love. May the Holy Spirit enable us to do so. Naturally our thoughts at such a season travel backwards in retrospect, and travel forward in anticipation of what may be. Let us then not restrain that which is natural, but only seek to make it useful. If we look back to 1833, we find Admiral Fitz Roy making a noble and spirited effort for Tierra del Fuego, and, alas, failing in his effort-the islanders were too savage. What then? Of course English people, English Christians, renewed the effort in another way, and were, after a year or so, successful? They don't generally like to be beaten!
