PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION. THE design of this Work is fully set forth in the Introductory Chapter. Its aim is to be practical, but it also deals fully, and in a manner never before attempted, with the History of Finance. The methods of Stock Exchange Transactions are clearly explained, and valuable information is given such as is likely to be of great service to intending Investors. Special attention is called to the "Financial Landmarks" and to the Chapters entitled "How Money is Made," "Brokers and Jobbers," "Permanent Investments Utilised for Profits," "Short and Quick Profits," and the " Choice of Stocks." The design is to show how capital may be used to the extent of its money-earning power, and how unprofitable investments, of which millions are held by the public, can be turned to advantage. Various points suggested by correspondents who have read the preceding large editions have received careful consideration, and have been treated, wherever possible; while the facts and figures are brought down to date.
