SCENES IN WALES.

THE following sketch of a journey, performed in South Wales, in the early part of the present century, were given to me by the lady-traveller; and as many years have elapsed since it took place, and most of those who are therein mentioned are dead, it cannot be deemed any infringement on private history to offer it to the general reader.

In 181-, a gentleman, whom I shall call Mr. Annesley, was unexpectedly called by important business into Wales. The house in which he was a junior partner had long held commercial transactions with the inhabitants of the principality, and the sudden death of the agent required the presence of one who was well acquainted not only with the affairs, but with the character of the people. Mr. Annesley was just married, and to leave his young wife was an unexpected trial; however, he being known to the Welch from a boy, being himself descended from one of their oldest families, and able to speak their language, he was so evidently the fittest person to go, that there was no alternative.
