er's presence. His enjoyment of a joke was perennial, and he would. be sure not to keep this one to himself.

At once she was released. There was the sound of a scuffle in the shrubbery, then a stifled curse, then a splash.

"What did you do?" she asked ecstatically, as Cox reappeared. "Only a tramp," he replied indifferently. "The night's so warm that the ducking will no more than cool him off-he needed it."

They watched a bedraggled figure crawl spluttering from the pond and dive into the friendly concealment of the bushes.

When they reached the house, they sought the retirement of the library. He seated himself on a low settle on one side of the fireplace and she was about to sit beside him, but he waved her away and lit a cigar.

"Sit over there till I'm through smoking," he said in a matterof-course tone.

Gee Whiz opened her eyes large in wonder, but she obeyed.

They sat in silence while he consumed nearly one-sixteenth of the cigar. Then Gee Whiz wriggled uneasily, and looking up at him with suspicious meekness, she said, "And to-morrow is Christmas morning. Peace and love to all the world-and to us."

"Don't delude yourself with any notions about peace and love," he replied sternly, flinging the unfinished cigar into the fireplace. "The motto of this combination is 'Vi et Armis.' Come over here!"

Shaler
Memorial

Editorial

To speak of a memorial for a great man is always a contradiction in terms. Dean Shaler needs no memorial for us, who have seen him day by day with his cane under his arm and his hat drawn over his eyes, striding through the Yard; who, some of us only superficially, others in matters touching our very souls, have come under the influence of his magical personality. We bear each of us our memorial of him. But for those who come after us, who have not been as fortunate as we, it is well that there should be some token to remind them daily that they are walking where Shaler walked; that they are one of a body that is stronger and more serviceable here and at the world's end because Shaler devoted to it his mind and his heart.

A tablet is to be set in Pierce Hall and a course of lectures is to be given, bearing the name of Dean Shaler. Admirable as these intentions are, they will not bring Dean Shaler as vividly before the Harvard men of the future as a memorial to him should. At the annual dinner of the Advocate editors, resolutions were made that a subscription be raised among the undergraduates toward securing a tablet or a bust of Dean Shaler to be placed in the Union. We strongly endorse this suggestion. In no wise could the life of this great man be more fittingly commemorated.

Incompe

In a recent issue, the Crimson commented on the conspicuous incompetency of many of the officers chosen to conduct undergraduate organizations. It is well known that any organization lives or dies by its governors. A single year of mismanagement may paralyze an institution's activities and deprive it of its prestige. The downward path is exceedingly steep and locomotion.

rapid. One idle treasurer may make life miserable for a half dozen of his successors, and one idle president may drive an organization into hopeless decay. The popular man is in many cases the worst officer; even if he be capable, he can do little, for his services will be required by so many clubs and societies that he can do justice to none. The annual election of officers in college organizations is more than a pleasant ceremony.
