Librarian of the King's Inns, Dublin. London. Seeleys. 1843. THE age of Charles the First may be regarded as the crisis of the Irish Reformation. The vigour of Elizabeth had crushed those rebellious movements, which had for their object the establishment of a Spanish influence in that country, and the policy of James had done more for the extension of English power and English influence, than had been accomplished by any of the princes who preceded him upon the throne of Britain. At the accession of Charles, the field seemed open, and the prospect sufficiently encouraging. The attachment of the great Irish chieftains to popery was rather political than religious. The change in the doctrines of the established church in King Edward's time had originated in England, and had been extended to Ireland under the sanction of English authority. These chiefs were themselves, indeed, for the most part, if not universally, men of irreligious principles and debauched morals, who could hardly entertain sincere conscientious scruples about renouncing their former profession of faith, and who actually did manifest no such scruples when a renunciation of it appeared materially useful for their purposes. But besides that a gross superstition often seizes upon the lurking consciences of such men with more tenacity than true religion-this connection of the reformed principles with English influence was a sufficient reason OCTOBER, 1843. 4 Y |
