• It may be questioned, Why the prince of the tribe of Judah, as also of Issachar and Zebulun were allowed to precede the prince of the tribe of Reuben, who was the eldest? To'which it is answered, in Medrash, that as from the tribe of Judah was to proceed the kings of the nation, (as may be observed from the blessing of Jacob, Genesis, chap. xlix. ver. 10. and as was afterwards fulfilled in David and Solomon, and their descendants,) be was, therefore, entitled to the pre-eminence of offering first; and Issachar was entitled to offer next on account of their great and profound knowledge in the law, as mentioned, 1 Chron. chap, xii, ver. 32. “And of the children of Issachar, “ which were men that had understanding of cimes, to know what Israel ought to do, &c." For this reason, it was that Zebulun followed him, because it was he that enabled the tribe of Issachar to study the law, by maintaining him, as Moses observes in his blessing, Deut. chap. cxxiii.

“And of Zebulun be said, Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out, and Issachar in thy tents.” The fourth that offered was Reuben, for when those of the standard of Judah bad offered, the next entitled was Reuben, he being the eldest and also on account of his endeavouring to rescue Joseph out of the hands of his brethren, as mentioned, Genesis, chap. xxxvii. ver. 21. “ And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, let us not kill him.”. After him followed Simeon, because he bad the courage to resent the injury done to his sister by Shechem; as mentioned, Genesis, chap. xxxiv. ver. 31. “And they said, should he deal with our sister as with an harlot ? And as to the prince of the tribe of Gad following him on the sixth day, was because they went over Jordan to assist their brethren in the conquering of the land; as mentioned, Deut. chap, xxxiii. ver. 21, “He executed the justice of the Lord, and his judge ments with Israel," See Jarchi,

ver, 18.

This verse cannot be grammatically construed. In the first place, mbay is in regimen, and may be rendered calves, or young of a certain beast, and also waggons. In the first, y must be another substantative in the genetive case, and so Aben Ezra understands it; and therefore he rendered it, six young beifers of a beast called 3, derived from O'ny, which Jonathan, in his Chaldean version, Isaiah, chap. Ixvi. ver. 20,, renders 79307, signifying a sort of ewes, or she goats, fit for burden or to ride upon; but, according to the translation of the English Bible, which is authorised by the Chaldean version of Onkelos, as also by the tradition of the Rabins, and by other expositors, who all render it covered waggons, Jy must be an adjective, and ought to be in the plural number, to agree with waggons. I cannot, however, help observing the inadvertency of commentators; for, Aben Ezra himself renders this word, in Isaiah, covered carriages.
