PIRST OF SAMUEL, CHAP. XX.

. Low · Then Jonathan said to David, to-morrow is the Yonathan. 'new-moon : and thou shalt be missed, because thy

seat will be empty. And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself, when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel. And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark. And behold, I will send a lad, saying, go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no burt; as the Lord liveth. But if I say thus unto the young man, behold, the arrows are beyond thee: go thy way, for the Lord hath sent thee away. And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between me and thee for ever. So Dayid hid himself in the field : and when the new-moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat. And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall : and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty. Nevertheless, Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, something hath befallen him, he is not clean ; surely he is not clean. And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to-day? and Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me, to go to Beth-lehem : and he said, let me go, I pray thee, for our family hath a sacrifice in the city, and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there; and now if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren: therefore he cometh not unto the king's table. Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do 'not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness? for as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom :: wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. And 'Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain ? what hath he done ? and Saul çast a javelin at him to smite him :

אֲשֶׁר

children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of my head, Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way? and now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see, that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of hosts. For of old time I have broken thy yoke and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill, and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot. Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine upon me? For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God. How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim ? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways. A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure, in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her, will not weary themselves ; in her month they shall find her. Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, there is no hope. No, for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, saying to a stock, thou art my father; and to a stone, thou hast brought me forth. For they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, arise, and save us.

But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities, are thy gods, o Judah.

In some Places they conclude here, but the Portuguese , Jews add the

following verses.

If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the Lord, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove. And thou shalt swear, the Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

The German Jews omit those two verses, but say the following.

Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, my Father, thou art the guide of my youth?
