APPENDIX V

THE WODROW MANUSCRIPTS

THE Wodrow MSS. form a large and valuable collection of papers recording facts in the history of Scotland, more especially in the period between 1560 and 1690, and embrace original documents, extracts from written and printed books and from minutebooks of various Courts, copies of deeds, declarations, papers, covenants, original letters and copies of letters from leading politicians and pastors, biographies of leading Reformers and Covenanters, and thousands of communications from correspondents. This extraordinary treasury was made by the Rev. Robert Wodrow, parish minister of Eastwood, near Glasgow, who was born in the famous year 1679 and died in 1735. When the mass was complete in 1722 it consisted of 40 folios, 100 quartos, and 30 octavos; other volumes must have been added after that date. Of the volumes preserved there remain in the Advocates' Library, Edinburgh, 22 vols. 8vo; 73 vols. 4to; 50 vols. folio; Letters, 4 vols. 8vo. ; 22 vols. 4to (containing 3880 letters); Analecta, 6 vols. in the Library of Glasgow University 15 vols. 4to; 9 vols. folio: in the Library of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, 4 vols. folio (numbered 26, 28, 29, 31).

With the aid of these documents Wodrow composed his History-Scotia Sub Cruce, begun in 1714 and published in 1721-2. Cf. supra, p. 156. The press marks of this MS., Scotia Sub Cruce, in the Advocates' Library are vol. xli., Rob. iii. 3. 14; xlvii., Rob. iii. 4. 2; xlviii. Rob. iii. 4. 3. The most important of the manuscripts, as far as the Covenanting period is concerned, are those original letters and papers, descriptive of personal sufferings on the part of the writers or of the sufferings of their friends in time of the persecution. These are many in number.

APPENDIX VI

The effect of the Act is to declare these Acts 'as spent,' and no longer available for practical purposes.

APPENDIX VII

ORDINATION IN THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND

THERE are several instances in the Records of the Presbytery of Dumbarton of 'Expectants' or Probationers having been admitted to the ministry of parishes without any Act of Ordination by the laying on of the hands of the Presbytery.' Such admission was said to be 'conform to the Acts and Practise of this Kirk.' The Presbytery seems to have laid stress upon three things necessary to a competent ministry, viz. a proper appointment, examination in the several pieces of 'tryalls,' and a call or 'consent and content' of the elders, heritors, and parishioners; but nothing was said with respect to ordination. The Minutes bear that when the 'Edict' of admission was returned duly served from the pulpit of the vacant church, the Presbytery ‘ordained,' i.e. instructed or appointed, two, three, or four ministers to go to the vacant church on the following Sunday 'to admit' the 'Expectant' to 'the functioun of the Ministrie at the said Kirk, whereof Intimatioun was made to the sayd parochiners.' At the following meeting of the Presbytery it was reported that the 'admissioune' to the 'Ministrie' had been given by the brethren as was appointed, with common consent and content of all the elders and parochioners of the sayd Kirk, present for the tym in great numbers.' This seems to have been sufficient to constitute the new minister as a member of the Presbytery, for his name appears in the sederunt of the meeting. The next step taken is to 'ordain Institutioune to be given him by the moderator and brethren who war befoir appointed for his admissioune,' which was duly reported to the following meeting of the Presbytery.

[ocr errors]

Such was the procedure of the admission of John Stewart to the Ministrie at the Kirk of Bonnull [Bonhill], on Sunday the 29th December 1639,' and his institution at Bonhill on Monday the 3rd February 1640; and of the admission of James Wood to the 'Ministrie' at Kilpatrick, on Sunday the 24th May 1640, which was reported on the 2nd June, when the Presbytery 'ordains Institutioune to be given by Mr. Archibald Cameron and Mr. John Stirling,' two ministers, members of the Presbytery, who reported on the 16th June that they had done so.

I am indebted to the Rev. William Simpson, Bonhill, for the above extracts from the Minute Books of the Presbytery of Dumbarton.
