The Queen will not appear any more in the drawing-room till after her lying-in.

It is faid that a negociation of a very important nature is now going for ward between our court and that of Berlin.

They write from Hamburgh, that 5000 tons of naval ftores have lately been bought up there by a Spanish agent. Advices have been received from Newfoundland, that Commodore Suldham effectually keeps the French in due bounds, and has intirely fuppreffed their encroachments on the fisheries.

Orders are giveu for fhipping fever al tons of timber and building materials, and for engaging workmen to repair the damages fnftained in his Majefty's garrifon in the West Indies by the late ftorms. Four veffels are taken up for that purpose.

We are informed that five fhips of the line and three frigates are ordered to take in fix months provifions immediately.

The Lords of the Admiralty have given orders for a man of war of 40 guns to be ftationed as a guard-fhip off Beachy-Head, in order to fearch all fhips coming from fufpected places in the north, and to prevent fmuggling in thofe parts.

Some very material alterations in the mode of collecting the excife duties are now under confideration.

We learn from Sweden, that his Swedish Majefty had exprefsly declared to feveral foreign ministers at his court, that all the preparations for war, which he was carrying on, had no other meaning than that of putting his kingdom in a proper ftate of defence. That Denmark had fet him the example; and that as foon as that crown fhould begin to difarm, he fhould immediately follow their example.

On the 7th inftant, Mr Dowdeswell was at court for the first time for fome years.

A great perfonage, it is faid, will in a few days make application to parliament for 200,000l.

On Sunday fe'nnight a meffenger from his Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester made a formal declaration at court of the pregnancy of her Royal Highnefs the Duchefs of Gloucester.

Acorrefpondent attempts to account for the time of a certain reconciliation being poftponed for the present: He fays, it is well known there is a great debt owing, which must be discharged by an equivalent fupply; and as the reconciliation will occafion a very large demand the firft neceffary fupply fhould be provided for before the latter is brought upon the carpet.

On Sunday fe'nnight Serjeant Glynn fat for the first time as Recorder of London. His charge to the Grand Jury was exceedingly pathetic, elegant, and inftructive, accompained with copious eulogiums on the bleffings this country enjoys over all others in having the freeedom of trial by a jury of their Peers.

It is reported, that feveral patriotic motions are intended to be made to both houfes after the holidays; though fome of them are only defigned to keep alive fome great questions of liberty againft the next general election.

A ftop is expected to be put to the exportation of corn from North America to France, Spain Portugal, or the Mediteranean markets, excepting to Gibraltar aud Minorca.

A ftop is alfo intended to be put to the foreign exportation of any kind of provision from Ireland, excepting to the British colonies in America and the Weft Indies.

The merchants, we hear, intend to make applications to obtain a bounty on the importation of corn from North America.

They write from Gibraltar, that the Moors are fitting out a powerful force at Tetuan and Larache, at which laft place they have eighteen armed vefels,

ten of them from 18 to 40 guns each. These letters add, that they have fuddenly withdrawn their troops from before Ceuta, where their lofs is faid to exceed 14,000 killed and wounded.

Upon the debate yesterday at the houfe of commons relative to the East India company, Mr Burke faid, that parliament was the ruin of that company; that in the year 1767 they took from theu 400,000l. and now they wanted to trample upon their rights and privileges; for as foon as ever the Eaft India company come into the hands of the crown, that moment they are ruined, and I would with (faid he) to fave them from deftruction. I fuppofe (continued the fame eloquent orator) we shall have our doors shut, but if they are, I will open fuch a fcene of iniquity as fhall aftonish all the world.

Extract of a Letter from Halle,

Nov. 22.

"A chymift at our academy has lately made an experiment of converting folid copper into a fluid ftate, which is the ftrongeft poifon ever known before If this poifon only comes into the lips, even though the teeth are clof together, the perfon muft die, its effect being incurable. Many experiments have been made on feveral animals and they were found 24 hours after their death, to be in a full fermentation, and their bodies covered with foam. He further demonstrates, that the use of copper veffels have been the cause of the death of feverai perfons taken off fuddeuly, which was attribute ed to an apoplexy, but the poifon proceeded from the copper."

In the Courter du Bas Rhin, just arrived, the fecret of making old titledeeds upon parchment legible, is difcovered, and is as follows: dip the parche ment obliterated by time into a veffel of cold water, fresh drawn from the well; in about a minute take it out, and prefs it between two papers, to prevent its crumpling up in drying. "By advices from the island of St. Thomas, received by a fhip which arrived yesterday, dated Sept. 10. we have a moft melancholy account, that on the 30th of Auguft a very violent hurricane happened there with a heavy rain. The fea rofe 70 feet above its ufual height, and tore away all the houfes, &c. that ftood near the shore, few of the inhabitants of which could fave themfelves; all the fruits of the earth, and fugar-canes are totally deftroyed: At St. Croix they fuffered much more. Extract of a Letter from London, December 7.

"The Lords proceeded to hear counfel farther in the caufe wherein the Earl of Rothes was appellant, and Sir John Anftruther, baronet, refpondent. Affirmed the decree.

"The Commons paffed the bill for allowing the free importation of Irish provifions; alfo, the bill to prohibit the exportation, and to allow the free importation of corn.

"Mr Alderman Harley reported from the fecret committee on India affairs, and then a motion was made that a bill be brought in to reftrain the India Company, for a limited time, from making any appointments of Commiflioners, or Supervifors, for regulat ing their affairs in India, which was agreed to 114 against 45.”

"The Commons read a fecond time the bill to restrain the Eaft-India company from appointing fupervisors. Agreed to the report of the amendments made to the malt-bill.-The Committee of ways and means refolved, that the land tax for 1773, fhould be 3 s. in the pound, which was to be reported on Monday."

Exchange 'twixt Dublin and London

The Exchange, Beatfon, was well in Bridlington Bay the 11th inft.

By a letter from Copenhagen, dated the 29th ult. we learn, that the expected rupture betwixt Sweden and Denmark is blown over, and the troops which were affembling are now difbanding.

On the 3d inft. one David Baird, a gardener, died at Paifley: he was in good health the preceeding day, and as his wife and he did not live very amicably together, a fufpicion arofe that fhe had poifoned him. The fociety of gardeners in that place, applied to a judge for a warrant to have his body opened: the furgeon who performed the operation, found a large quantity of arfenic in his ftomach, with which they have tried feveral experiments, one of which was giving a little of it to a chicken, which killed it in a few hours. The woman is committed to prifon,but refused to confefs the crime, though one of the apothecaries gave evidence, that fhe afked for arfenic to poifon rats, which he refused to fell her.

A letter from a merchant in St. Kitt's, to his correfpondent in Glasgow, dated Oct. 7, 1772. mentions, "That there is fcarcely a houfe in the island

but has received fome hurt from the late hurricane; that about an hundred in town, are either blown down or greatly damaged by it; that their fufferings in the country are by far greater, where, at least, a third of the boiling houfes and works are totally deftroyed, and that from the damage done the canes, the crop next year cannot fall fhort lefs than 8000 hhds: of fugar. By this terrible vifitation of Providence, feveral white people have loft their lives, and a great number of negroes have been killed.

They write from Glasgow, that within these few days the following rob beries have been committed there, viz. A porter-cellar was broke intò, and feveral things of value carried off. A houfe in High-ftreet was broke into, and linens and other things of value carried off. The flesh-market was broke into, and beef and mutton to the amouut of 61. ftolen from thence. A houfe in Adam's Court was broke into, and about 14 l. in money, with o ther things of value, carried off. On Tuesday fe'enight a man was knocked down in the High-ftreet about ten o'clock at night, but not robbed. Wednefday fe'enight, about feven, another was knocked down near Bell's-wynd, and robbed of fome filver.

The poft-boy for the Queensferry was ftopped on Saturday night in the Lawn-market here, for riding on the mail-cart, by one of the Sheriff-officers, who imagined the rider was tranfgrefsing the late act of parliament, which prohibits carters from riding on their carts within the city or toll-bars; the Sheriff-officer was imprifoned for examination till Monday, and then liberated. No provifion is made in this act for the post-boy riding on his cart, the mail-carts not being in use when the act paffed, fo that this blunder (if it is one) is, as the law now ftands excufable.

On the roth inft. about fix o'clock in the evening, the house of one Mrs. Steel, at Wright's houfes, a mile weft

of this city, was broke into; thirty guineas, and a 31. 12s. piece was ftolen, befides plate and other things of value, to the amount, in all, of near one hundred pounds.

On the 11th inft. betwixt one and two o'clock in the morning, by order of the Magiftrates and Sheriff, a search was made through this city and fuburbs, by the Conftables, affifted by the town-guard, &c. and 28 perfons wre apprehended, on fufpicion of being concerned in the late robberies and houfe-breakings: they have been examined this forenoon: a boy among them, calling himfelf John Robertfon, had 8 1. in gold and filver found in his cuftody, which he owned, before the Magiftrates, to have ftolen from Archibald Stewart, Baker in Leith, whom he had ferved fome time. Several of them have been liberated on bringing proof of their character, and others are committed to prifon for further examination.-We are informed that the magiftrates are determined to exert themselves to the utmoft, in difcovering and bringing to justice thofe attrocious villains, who infeft this city and neighbourhood.

In confequence of another fearch by the Conftables, Guard-foldiers, &c. Twelve more fufpected perfons have been taken up fince Saturday evening, and confined to the city-guard and Canongate tolbooth; two of them were formerly whipped and banished the city.

On Sunday night about ten o'clock, a gentleman paffing through Brown's Square, was attacked by two men who demanded his money, and on refufal they knocked him down, and rifled his pockets of two guinea notes, his watch and fome filver, and then made off.

A pair of large filver candlesticks were ftolen out of a gentleman's houfe in George's Square, on Tuesday fe'ennight; the thief (a woman) was apprehended next day, fhe is an old of fender, and was whipt through this town about a fortnight before.

On Wednesday fe'ennight, Robert Johnfton carter in Fountainbridge, was incarcerated in the tolbooth of Edinburgh, by warrant of the Sheriff, there having been found in his cuftody two facks of flour which had been stole from a baker's fhop without the West-port, on Monday night.

Four failors belonging to the Thomas and Mary cutter,of Flushing, were committed to prifon on Monday fe'en night, for firing at Capt, Ogilvie's yacht, and were admitted to bail on Wednefday, they finding fecurity to ftand trial under the penalty of 301. fterl. each.

We hear from Inverness, that laft week, as a North country drover was returning home from the South he was attacked by four men about three miles North from Avemore, who fired twice at him; the first miffed him, but he received the other in the flank. Very luckily his horte took fright at the report of the piftols, and ran off with him back to Avemore. Diligent fearch is making for thefe daring offenders by the Sheriff of Inverness, and by all the gentlemen in that part of the country. The hot was extracted from the man at Inverness, and he is now in a fair way of recovery.

Laft Week a Man in the Parish of Dallas and County of Murray, going to Nairn to buy fresh Herring, was loft in the River Findhorn.

A traveller fuggefts to thofe concerned, the bad ftate of the road leading from this place towards Methven, being greatly broken by the late heavy rains, and needing to be immediately repaired. He obferved a very dangerous nufance on the road fide to the weftward of Huntingtower parks, many holes of a flate quarry dug near the road, which must be very hazardous to strangers travelling in the dark; fhould not this quarry be clofed on each fide of the road to prevent accidents?
