AND 141ST ST., NEW YORK CITY Stained Glass and Mosaics The Gorham Studios have earned and received the unqualified endorsement of both Clergy and Laymen for their recent productions in stained glass and mosaics. Their aim to produce only that which shall be true to the highest traditions of ecclesiastical art has been gratified to a remarkable degree, and it can now be said that in this country, through them, is being produced, both in mosaics and stained glass, work equal in every respect to that produced abroad. Examination and verification of these facts is earnestly solicited. The Gorham Company Fifth Ave. and 36th St., New York City THE VICTOR JANUARY 1918 We are born the children of God; we become through struggle and discipline the sons and daughters of God. Sonship and daughterhood is a victory that must be won. "He that overcometh shall inherit **** and I will be his God and he shall be my son." What then-is not inheritance ours by right of birth? The inheritance is never ours until we overcome. are children and not sons and daughters until we win battles, overcome temptations, realize virtues, through struggle. Only so can we understand and enter into the meaning of any inheritance worth while. We Not every child passes into sonship, into daughterhood. There comes a day -the greater birthday of the soulwhen the boy says "Father!" with a new note in his voice: when the girl says "Mother!" with a new understanding. They have fought and won and inherited. There came a day when the Master said to His disciples: "You have left all for my Cause, you have sacrificed and served; I will no longer call you "servants'-you shall be called the friends of God." We are born children of God. We have the chance of becoming the sons and daughters of God. The price is that we lead the overcoming life. There is NO. 5 no other way. When the Master put down evil and fought in mortal conflict with the suggestions that prompted an easy success at the price of compromise, and overcame, God visited Him with His angels. After each new victory came the Voice, "My Son! My Son!" Here is the Christian's "Croix de guerre." We war not against flesh and blood, but against the dark forces of wrong. It is a great fight; and to the overcoming God has one reward. "These," He says, "are they who have come through great tribulation, and have stood firm for the right, for justice and love. They are My sons and daughters." herit at the point of struggle. The The moral universe is one, and we inmoral heavens open and close there. Cain fails at "Thou shalt not kill", and the heavens are as brass. Joseph wins out at "Thou shalt not commit adultery" and Jehovah is God. Every victory won is a moral world won. The mortal atom also contains the universe. He that offendeth in one point offendeth in all. But he that wins out at the one point of temptation and struggle wins out in all. No one inherits truth or right or justice or goodness until he begins to do battle with their opposites. Put down meanness and you begin to inherit goodness. Overcome narrowness and you inherit breadth. Gain the victory over |
