Occasional Causes.

It was maintained by Malebranche, that God is, the only true cause; that the nature or force of each individual thing is only the will of God; that, Natural Causes are not True Causes, but only Occasional Causes. The exposition of this doctrine, given by Mr. Dugald Stewart, is, that the causes which it is the aim of Philosophy to investigate are only Occasional Causes; and, that the Deity is, himself, the efficient and immediate Cause of every effect in the Universe.
