John Douland, the great lutenist, who composed many of the tunes for this volume (which was edited by his son Robert), and also wrote a treatise upon Lute-playing contained in it, is referred to in Shakespeare's Passionate Pilgrim, of 1599, in the sonnet beginning "If Musicke and sweet Poetrie agree," in the following lines:

"Douland to thee is deere, whose heavenly touch

Upon the lute doth ravish human sense.

The volume is of extraordinary interest as it gives the best lute music of Shakespeare's time.

Durante, the pupil of Scarlatti and master of Pergolesi, was the chief exponent of the Neapolitan school in the 18th century, though but little of his music has been printed.

These Gardens were in Southwark, and were a place of popular resort until about 1778.
