A very rare edition of Hilton's Catches. It is dedicated "to all Lovers of Musick," and contains compositions by Henry and William Lawes, W. Byrd, John Wilson, and others, besides many by Hilton himself. One of the latter is Shakespeare's "What shall he have that kill'd the Deer? "

The author was an eccentric dancing-master of Cheshire who came to London about 1724. His play of "Hurlothrumbo," which was satirized by Fielding in his "Author's Farce,' made a great sensation, and the words mere Hurlothrumbo," bade fair to establish themselves as a proverbial phrase.
