good. Our shade should be that of a date-palm in the desert. We made many mistakes, as you may imagine; but we know better now; the influence of that lesson dwelt in us and remained. When can you come and see us and hear all about it ?"

"Alas! I cannot," she said, her eyes filling with tears. "My aged relative demands all my time and attention. She is now totally blind."

Maurice looked in her face. He thought he saw tokens there that the cross she had taken up had been very, very heavy.

"You are still with your aunt," he said, tenderly.

'Yes; it is my right place."

"Not at all. God made you my teacher that I might learn that which I now communicate; the best of my teachings are but an echo of yours. Truly it is so; I feel that I can never express all my indebtedness to you."

Then she bowed her meek head, breathing low "God, I thank Thee that Thou didst put upon me

the high honour of making me a teacher"; while Mabel whispered softly,—

Is it so, reader? Then pause and think upon it, for verily influence remains not only with the great and gifted, like to these, but, in varying degrees, with all of us. Let us, then, be careful of two things, that in our character-building, whether for stately temple or cottage home, according to our means and space, we look well to our line. Also, since our echoes must pass, let us take care that our trumpets give not forth either a harsh or an uncertain sound; for, though by reason of earth's many noises, and our own insignificance, the other players on life's orchestra may not heed whence the discord ariseth, the great Master of Harmonies will; and He will bate the breath, and rive the harp strings, which, in even so much as single notes, have been used to spoil His world of harmony. Not only through the corridors of Time, but also into the infinitely multitudinous centres of an unknown eternity, do we believe that
