PREFACE.

SOME recent evidences of public interest in my religious opinions have emboldened me to carry into immediate effect a hesitating purpose, long entertained, of publishing a volume of sermons. In selecting them, I have been mainly governed by the desire to throw light upon the discussion of my Cambridge Address, and no way has seemed so fair as to print such sermons from my ordinary preaching as would exhibit the successive stages of thought by which my conclusions were reached. I have been anxious, too, to show the connection between my specific opinions upon the points in recent debate, and my general opinions. Not wishing to appear any more fixed or consistent in my views than I really am, I have been careful to select discourses from both poles of my experience, and with a total disregard to superficial agreement and coherency. The sermons are left in their original form, and allusions, local and occasional, retained, in evidence of their genuineness. The dates are also given, that no light may be withheld which the order and time of
